SURVEYS SUGGEST GOLFERS CAN’T ACCURATELY JUDGE DISTANCES: Bushnell Laser Rangefinders Help Eliminate Mistakes When Judging Distance Press Release
Overland Park, KS – A recently conducted survey by Nelson Research, Inc., an independent research firm, suggests that most golfers believe they are accurate judges of distance. However, a recent study by Golf Digest illustrated that even PGA Tour pros are subject to errors, and those errors increase especially at the amateur level as handicaps go up.
“If the most practiced eyes in the world, such as touring pros and their caddies, are prone to a certain degree of error in judging yardage, it stands to reason that, despite their best efforts, middle to high handicappers are subject to significant miscalculations," said Phil Gyori, vice president of marketing, Bushnell Performance Optics. “The Bushnell Yardage Pro laser rangefinders provide assurance that you know the exact yardage and, consequently, have the correct club in hand, which will directly lead to lower scores. In fact, 64% of those who regularly use the Yardage Pro in their golf game, report an improvement of two strokes per round!”
Nelson Research surveyed golfers with an average handicap of 15 and a full 91% of the respondents felt they were accurate at judging distances. The Golf Digest article (August 1998) tested 10 middle to high handicappers, asking them to judge a standard distance of 134 yards. The amateurs’ average estimate of 156 yards was off by 22 yards – potentially two full clubs. In the same article, judging the same distance, 10 PGA Tour pros’ average estimate was 141 yards, still of by 7 yards.
