Golf Packages of the Carolinas

Chris Bereznay

I've been playing for several years now and have succumbed to the golf conversations by the water coolers at work, in the lunch room and at the local watering hole. It never fails that in one of these jaunts down memory and glory lane, someone mentioned a round or two they played while on a golf trip in the Myrtle Beach, South Carolina area. Listen a little longer and you'll probably hear about some nocturnal adventures as well.

Not wanting to be left out, I began to discuss the topic with my group of players some of which had been longing to make the trip as well - and alas - my pal Pete decided to organize the trip and get the boyz down to this wonderful golf mecca.

The trip was organized through an organization known as 'Golf Packages of the Carolinas', an on-line firm that we were using for the first time. Most of us had purchased items online in the past, but usually from very well known and reputable companies, airlines, etc. so we really weren't sure what we were going to get. However, for the low, low price of $319 per man we were being offered 3 nights in a villa at the Aberdeen Country Club, as well as 6 rounds at some of the prettiest courses we'd ever played.

Day 1 Round 1 brought us to Brunswick Plantation. This was a substitute due to the fact that Pearl East and West had recently been aerated. Traveling all this way to play an obstacle course instead of a golf course was not what we had in mind so we went ahead and switched the first day out for a couple of substitutions. Brunswick plantation was extremely well maintained and provided great views, challenging holes and friendly staff.

Day 1 Round 2 had us travelling just a few minutes away to Pelican Bay, another course that was nestled into a resort / retirement community and was equally if not as nice as Brunswick Plantation. Two of the gents in our group didn't enjoy Pelican Bay as much as I did, it had very wide forgiving fairways and was a pretty easy course to play, but I was able to find my game on this course and enjoy it for the rest of the trip. One of the nicest things about this trip was that it was chillier than normal for May and there was an on and off drizzle that really kept most golfers off the courses that first day. We literally could see no one in front of us and no one behind on many of the holes on each course.

Day 2 Round 1 - After a hard day, the group was exhausted. Finishing the first round at Lion's Paw was going to be a chore. It was a shame we were so tired, because this was one pretty course - and quite the popular attraction among the Carolina crowds. After struggling through Lion's Paw, we took a break in the clubhouse and only managed 9 holes in the afternoon at Panther Run - another award winning Carolina course.

Overall we were all very pleased with this trip. I can not say what a great value it was. The long drive down to Myrtle was not easy, but to keep costs down it was the best way to go. We highly recommend taking your next trip to this golf paradise.
