Nike Pro Combo Hybrid

Andrew Penner

As to be expected, there is some cross-breeding, in-breeding, and a plethora of biological experimentation happening within golfdom’s hybrid families. Deformities and unabashed ugliness (strange head shapes, etc.) are sure to be the outcome of many such experiments. Some of this procreation, however, has turned out ok. While not the nicest looking bloke on the block, The Nike Pro Combo Utility Iron might be one of the keepers.

This new kid from Nike is a unique, high-tech offering that was created to help low and mid-handicap players “work” the ball. The club, which features a 70-gram tungsten plug tucked in a rear cavity, is a sleek, contemporary-looking “thing” that takes all shame out of hitting those “girly hybrids.”

The verdict: Its dad (a traditional hard-to-hit long iron) and its mom (she would be the curvy, sweet-eyed hybrid) “got together” and spawned a fairly well-mannered youngster. (But, clearly, this little feller more closely resembles his dad.) However, I found the Pro Combo much easier to hit than a traditional long iron (more like his mom). Impact was soft and quiet and it produced a ball flight that was surprisingly high (I choose the 18 degree model – it also comes in 20 and 22 degrees). Thanks in part to its tungsten plug – and a great stepped shaft by True Temper – this “mutation” can certainly perform. For more information check out www.nikegolf.com. The manufacturer’s suggested retail price of the Pro Combo is USD $189.
