Warner Books announced today that they have acquired a book by current Masters Champion Phil Mickelson. The book, to be called ONE MAGICAL SUNDAY: But Winning Isn't Everything, co-written with bestselling author Donald T. Phillips, is scheduled to be published in hardcover on April 4, 2005. It will be in stores prior to the 2005 Masters, which starts on April 7th in Augusta, GA.
With his easy-going style and outgoing way, Phil Mickelson is one of the most beloved and successful golfers on today's tour. But as any golfing fan will tell you, for all of Phil's high finishes and his standing near the top of every year's money list, he had never won a major tournament on the PGA tour in his first 42 tries as a professional.
But then on Easter Sunday, April 12th, 2004, all that changed when Phil won The Masters. Mickelson made five birdies in the final seven holes, including a 18-foot putt on the last hole, to earn a one-stroke victory over Ernie Els.
But his dramatic Masters victory is, in truth, only a part of Phil's remarkable journey to become one of the most popular sports figures of our time. As the book recounts each hole on that fateful Sunday afternoon at Augusta, Phil reflects upon his private moments in his journey: how he was first introduced to the game he loves by his father, how he developed his unique analytical approach during his amateur years, how he convinced his college coach at Arizona State to become his agent, and then to his current life as a husband and father who keeps his professional game in total harmony with his family's needs.
Along the way, Phil, along with his wife Amy, share insights into their relationship and how they balance the ongoing demands of a professional golfer with the daily demands of raising three young children. Insightful, playful, and poignant, Phil writes with great candor and honesty about how his game fell off a bit in 2003 and what he did to resurrect it in 2004, climaxing with his win at the Masters.
In making the announcement, Time Warner Book Group Chairman and CEO Laurence J. Kirshbaum said, "Phil Mickelson is the real deal, a champion on and off the golf course. This book shows that no matter how many majors he wins, he'll always be at the top of the leader board in family values."
And acquiring editor, Rick Wolff, Executive Editor and Vice President of Warner Books, added, "Phil Mickelson is one of those rare individuals in life who transcends his stature as a top professional athlete. He, along with his wife Amy, form a very special and unique couple -- two people who definitely have their life's priorities in order. It's an honor and privilege to be able to publish Phil's first book."
Warner Books is a division of the Time Warner Book Group, which is a unit of Time Inc.
