Atlantis, FL — Jim Bounds of Boynton, Florida beat 67 million-to-one odds when he made not one, but two aces in the same round at Atlantis CC and Inn on March 19th. They were the fifth and sixth aces of his golf career.
“The truth is, I wasn’t playing well at all,” said Bounds, who shot a 77 for the round. “I just made two good shots at the right times. In fact, I was kind of experimenting in the round, trying to figure what brand of golf ball and which irons I’m going to use in the next stage of qualifying for the U.S. Senior Amateur Championship.”
Bounds still hasn’t decided which brand of ball he’s going to use because he made the first ace on the 140-yard fifth hole with a Callaway Tour HX ball and the second on the 169-yard 17th with a Titleist Pro V1x. However, he was consistent with his irons as he used Vulcan VX Tour blades for both.
“I still don’t know what ball I’m going to use, but I do know what irons will be in the bag,” he said. “I first saw these irons at the PGA Merchandise Show a couple of years ago and fell in love with them. I’m a club maker myself and I ordered two sets of the heads and have different shafts in each set. They look really good and have a nice, solid feel.”
The pair of aces capped an impressive week for Bounds. He started the week by chipping in for a birdie on the first playoff hole to advance in qualifying for the U.S. Senior Amateur Championship. On Wednesday of that week, he celebrated his 25th wedding anniversary. On Thursday his daughter qualified for the U.S. Open of synchronized swimming.
“It’s really been something else,” said Bounds of his week. “People have been asking me to buy lottery tickets for them. The funny thing about the hole in ones was that I ended up losing all my matches. I only helped my partner on three holes and two of them were aces. I ended up having to buy drinks and pay up after the round.”
All was not lost, however. Atlantis CC Director of Golf Todd Leckrone stepped forward upon hearing of Bounds’ tremendous feat and awarded him a one-year membership.
“I had never heard of anyone making two holes-in-one in the same round before,” said Leckrone, “and I felt he definitely deserved to win something on a day like that.”
