Sonartec User Forces Playoff at Wachovia

Press Release

Posted 2005-05-14

Sonartec Golf congratulates the 23rd-ranked player in the world on his second place finish at the Wachovia Championship at the Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte this weekend. The runner-up managed to overcome a daunting six stroke deficit in the final round of play to force a three-way playoff with the second and ninth-ranked players in the world. Sonartec also celebrated its 16th #2 hybrid ranking in 19 PGA Tour events in 2005.

As the leader battled fits of wildness on Sunday, the eventual runner-up began his incredible comeback with the first of four consecutive birdies at the par-5 fifth hole. All told, he would amass seven birdies in shooting a final round 66 (-6). Only a bogey at the par-4 ninth would keep him from winning the event out-right.

"The runner-up showed remarkable resilience in battling his way back to force the playoff," said Sonartec Vice President of Operations Jim Uno. “His performance has been steadily improving since his surgery and we hope the growing momentum will carry through as the "Major" season gets into full-swing.”

After the leader bogeyed 17, the runner-up sank a 15-foot, side-hill birdie putt at the par-4 18th to punch his ticket for the playoff. When the ninth-ranked player in the world was eliminated after missing a short par putt on the first playoff hole, the two remaining players began what turned out to be a thrilling sudden-death match between two of the best golfers in the world. The outcome was decided after four playoff holes, when the second-ranked player in the world saved par from a green-side bunker.
