MacGregor PGA Tour Staff player Jose Maria Olazábal dominated the Mallorca Classic at the Pula Golf Club in Spain Oct. 20-23 to win by five strokes and capture his 23rd career title on the European International Tour. Olazábal used all 14 MacGregor clubs to propel him to victory, including an Eye-O-Matic driver, custom M675 irons, V-FOIL TOUR wedges and a Bobby Grace M2 putter. The 39 year old two-time Masters Champion shot a remarkable 31 on the front nine on the final day to push a one shot lead to four, and then cruised home for the victory with a closing round of 66. He was a model of consistency throughout the tournament, hitting an average of 76.4 percent of the greens and 71.4 percent of the fairways in regulation.
“It has been a real pleasure to watch Jose return to his position as one of the best golfers in the game and much of it can be traced to his accuracy and added distance,” said Barry Schneider, chairman and CEO of MacGregor Golf. “He also is providing an excellent platform to showcase the advances in technology MacGregor clubs are bringing to golfers of all skill levels around the world.”
The victory jumped Olazábal 10 places in the world rankings to 28th and also moved him into fourth place on the European Ryder Cup points list. He started the year ranked 155th and has been one of the hottest golfers of 2005 with 13 top 25 finishes worldwide.
“I’ve been climbing the world rankings again by working hard and this is the result. I’m moving in the right direction,” Olazábal said afterwards. “It would be nice to get back on to the (Ryder Cup) team."
