Quick Take: Scotty Cameron Futura Putter

Andrew Penner

“It looks like it should have scales, or something.” “Does it bite?” “Do you brand cattle with it?” The comments are almost as good as the putter itself. If Paul Azinger’s putter a few years back was called “The Thing,” then this would surely be its evil stepchild. While Scotty Cameron’s new Futura putter (by Titleist) is about as weird a looking contraption as has ever been created, there are enough reasons to slowly tippy-toe near one of these things to give it a try. Just, whatever you do, don’t startle it.

The Futura Putter, which took the master Cameron five years and who knows how many cups of jo to concoct, is actually a beautifully crafted putting mechanism that rolls the ball better than, well, anything I’ve ever tried - and anything Scotty’s ever tested in his studio.

The putter is fitted with a steel horshoe-shaped ring in the back, which makes up 75% of the weight, and the shaft is positioned well off the face to promote a good path. Throw in the aluminum-milled face, a sole that’s designed to never close, weights plugged into the back of the face to add stability, a deep center of gravity for extra balance, a point-and-shoot T-frame, and you’ve got a “thing” that I could definitely warm up to. Putter comes in 34 and 35” models. Muzzle’s extra.

Andrew Penner is a 12-year member of the Canadian PGA. He has won five professional golf tournaments in Canada and narrowly, I mean narrowly, missed qualifying for the US Open last year. Well, OK, it was a few shots. Andrew writes for a number of golf magazines in Canada, the US, and Europe. His new book, titled "One Flew Over The Caddyshack," can be ordered at www.falconpress.ca.
