adidas Golf, the fastest growing footwear and apparel company in the industry, today unveiled its fall 2002 footwear line featuring two unique technologies Fit Foam and ClimaProof that helped the brand win nearly 30 tournaments worldwide last season.
Fit Foam and ClimaProof were integrated into selected adidas Golf spring 2002 introductions, taking successful footwear science and design used by other athletes (running, training) and fitting them to specifically meet the needs of the core golfer.
Launched in Orlando at this week’s PGA Merchandise Show, the brand's fall performance offerings include the men's Z TRAXION Tour, Saddle Tournament and Saddle Competition (suggested retail $100-$140) as well as the women's Stripe Competition ($100).
All carry a one- or two-year waterproof warrantee and will ship to on- and off-course outlets in early April. Colors offerings consist of various combinations of coffee, dark brown, molasses, white, black and legacy.
“All golfers are athletes, and from sport to sport, our research shows that many have the same foot conditions,” said Paul Clark, global director of adidas Golf, speaking to adidas’ comprehensive approach to the development of performance equipment.
“Since we introduced Fit Foam and ClimaProof to better players last year, the response has been uniform in its praise: adidas Golf shoes are easily the most stable and comfortable in the game.”
In the latest Darrell Survey consumer survey almanac (2001), adidas Golf footwear beat Nike and FootJoy in overall satisfaction ratings among golfers aged 30 and under and 31-50. Combining 0-10 and 11-20 handicap categories, adidas Golf also rated as the No. 1 footwear brand.
Fit Foam, ClimaProof: Player Features, Benefits
According to Brett Joyce, global footwear line manager for adidas Golf, Fit Foam molds to the exact contour of golfers' feet, creating a customized form-fitting footbed for superior comfort. Located in the inlay sole, tongue and heel, this visco-elastic foam is engineered to evenly distribute weight and pressure, eliminating hot spots throughout the shoe.

A combination of technologies, ClimaProof works together to keep the foot both cool and dry. Outside, it combats against many climate changes (extreme temperature, rain and dew) with Sympatex, a lightweight, ultra-thin, non-porous polyester membrane that is totally waterproof. Inside, a proprietary wicking material removes perspiration and other moisture to ensure the foot's hold within the shoe.
Top-Tiered Offerings: Other Technologies
The Saddle Tournament, Saddle Competition and Stripe Competition possess various features beyond Fit Foam and ClimaProof (the Z TRAXION Tour has only ClimaProof).
All technologies detailed below are found in every model, with the exception of the TPU outsole (which is only offered in the Z TRAXION Tour):
· Z TRAXION. With adidas Z TRAXION, integrated z-shaped lugs combine lateral and linear grip for comfort, stability and superior traction. This also maximizes surface area in contact with the ground to provide better pressure distribution and eliminate hot spots. And the unique TRAXION stud design is constructed to be the most green-friendly outsole in golf.
· TORSION. During the golf swing and other movements unique to the sport, the heel and forefoot often move and rotate independently. TORSION controls this natural motion to create stability and support.
· Fast Twist. Simply the fastest cleat changing system in golf, requiring a mere quarter-turn per spike.
· adiPRENE. Considering that the force exerted onto the feet during the golf swing is more than 1.6 times body weight, impact absorption is critical to a comfortable round. adiPRENE provides a long-lasting, cushioned absorption zone in the heel of the shoe, protecting the foot and reducing the harmful effects of repetitive impact.
· TPU, which stands for Thermalplastic Urethane, a lightweight, durable material used on the outsole to create a stable hitting platform.
· Sympatex®. A lightweight, ultra-thin, non-porous polyester membrane that is totally waterproof, windproof and highly breathable. The unique non-porous construction creates a wall against wetness that transports perspiration so feet can breathe.
· EVA. Full-length EVA midsole provides superior cushioning while alleviating cleat pressure.
