Quick Take Reviews: Ping M/B Wedges

Andrew Penner

The world’s best wedge players can hit it off of anything: hardpan, cartpaths, ball washers, the top of golf carts, etc. And, for most of them, performing such deeds means that their wedges have to be nurtured – caressed and ground to yield the perfect lie, loft, bounce angle, swing weight, etc. But the fact of the matter is most of us - even those who have never attempted the shot off the top of a golf cart (don’t try it, trust me, the roof just folds in like a cheap lawn chair) - cannot be bothered with the intricate details of pounding and grinding wedges to the ultimate in performance specs. Please, without the hassle, just give us a wedge that works! Bounce angles, leading edges, lead tape, who knows? Who cares? Give us functional simplicity.

Enter the Ping M/B Wedges – wedges that cater to all golfers, all swings, all conditions (so they say). Nice. That’s my style.

The Ping Mid-Bounce Wedges are classic wedges cut from the same cloth as the S59 irons. That is, they are classic in appearance and have that choice, non-glare finish that Ping Irons have been known for throughout the ages.

The biggest bonus with these wedges, however, comes in the form of the variable-width sole. Yes, I realize that that’s a bit technical for some readers. But trust me, the bevelled edge simply allows you to open up the wedge (to play that soft, silky, lobber that gently clinks off the stick and drops) and still keep the leading edge tight to the ground. Call it an “anti-head-high-missile-that-nearly-decapitates-nice-old-ladies-on-the-next-tee device.” These slick wedges come in eight different loft options.
