It’s a known fact: the sequel often disappoints. Caddyshack 2 was pitiful, bordering on sacrilege. Dumb and Dumber 2 was a regurgitative experience. The list of wasteful sequels is a mile long. Thankfully, for golfers anyway, popular sequels and extensions when it comes to golf clubs are often quite “stomachable.” Engineers seem to have an uncanny ability to improve on already solid manufacturing techniques and they generally give you, the golf nut, an opportunity to smack it further - and donate back to them greater percentages of your tip money. (Money makes the golf world go round).
Coming off the success of the SS Drivers - their most popular drivers ever - King Cobra had a huge task in coming up with something bigger and better…well, better anyway. (Bigger would have meant a transition into the metal bucket business).
Early reports indicate that Cobra’s SZ drivers are, in fact, finer weapons than the SS drivers. The SZ, which stands for “sweat zone,” is the key difference of this line. Basically, Cobra has manufactured a “hotter” sweet spot by incorporating a rhombus-shaped, thicker insert into the face, which is surrounded by a thinner oval-shaped insert and an even thinner perimeter (this makes the ball jump off the face). In addition, there are dual weight pads (inserted on the heel and toe) that have allowed the designers to optimize the launch angle and spin rates.
To me, the SZ driver feels every bit the powerful, ball-crushing tool that the SS was, but with an added bonus of mis-hits not being as effected thanks to this new technology. So, is the SZ a sequel that I would recommend? Absolutely. No stomach churning nonsense here. www.cobragolf.com
