When you go to one of those testosterone-enriched long drive competitions you see grown (often very grown) men lunging at golf balls with enough pent-up rage that their equipment, if they choose poorly, can shatter to pieces. All of them have stories of breaking clubs, caving in faces, and snapping clubheads like they’re twigs. With bone-jarring ball speeds that often surpass 200 mph, the equipment they choose is critical. They simply have to have something that can withstand the brutal, all-out assault on the ball. They have to have something that they can trust for long – ok, stupid long – driving. For a growing contingent of long drivers, the brand of choice is Alpha Reaction Golf.
I recently picked up a new Alpha C830.2 titanium driver and smacked a few shells with it. What a cannon! Over the past few years I’ve fired off a fair share of weaponry on the battlefield. But this 460 cc behemoth is easily, and I mean easily, one of the best. Trust me, this machine can move it. The C830.2, which is new for 2004, features a super-thin Ti insert, a huge oval sweetspot, thanks to its unique ITD (Increased Target Design) technology, and the maximum allowable COR. But one of the best features of this driver is the 72-gram, Alpha Platinum2 graphite shaft. Frequency matched and constructed with advanced high modulus graphite fibers, this could be the best stock shaft on the market.
My experience on the range left me with three key thoughts. 1. This club hits it far. 2. This club produces a beautiful, penetrating ball flight. 3. I need me one of these things.
