Sorenstam Wins Again with ERC Fusion Driver, HX Tour Ball; Corning Victory is 61st Worldwide, 51st on LPGA Tour Press Release
CARLSBAD, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 1, 2004--Callaway Golf (NYSE:ELY) Staff Professional Annika Sorenstam continued to build on her illustrious LPGA Hall of Fame career on Sunday by adding the 2004
Corning Classic in New York to her long list of career triumphs.
Sorenstam closed with a 4-under-par 68 that put her at 270, 18 under
par and two shots clear of Vicki Goetze-Ackerman and Michelle Estill.
For the 51st time on the LPGA Tour, and the 61st time of her pro
career, Sorenstam won with a bag full of Callaway Golf products,
including the revolutionary ERC(R) Fusion(R) Driver, Big Bertha(R)
Strong 4-wood, HX(R) Tour Golf Ball, Steelhead(R) X-14(R) Irons,
Callaway Golf Forged+ Wedge and an Odyssey(R) White Hot(R) 2-Ball
Blade Putter.
It was a remarkable return to the Corning Country Club, a course
Sorenstam hadn't played since arriving there as a second-year pro
without a single LPGA win to her credit nine years ago. This time she
didn't arrive at the course until late Wednesday and on Thursday
morning -- without benefit of a practice round -- went out and fired
an opening-round 65.
"I'm really happy with the way I played this week," said
Sorenstam, who had promised she would play the Corning Classic this
year after skipping last year for her historic appearance in the PGA
Tour's Bank of America Colonial. "My swing was good and I felt very
comfortable hitting driver, even on the really tight driving holes,
because of the confidence I have with my ERC Fusion Driver. The fans
here were great, very supportive. I'll be back."
Sorenstam had plenty of company from other players in the field
who relied on Callaway Golf equipment at Corning. For the fifth time
this year on the LPGA Tour, Callaway Golf won the overall counts in
irons, woods and putters.
Across the globe, the same was true on the Japan Golf Tour
Organization (JGTO), where Callaway Golf swept the club count in every
category -- drivers, fairway woods, irons and putters -- for the
eighth straight time this season.
In other notable performances by touring pros using Callaway Golf
equipment over the Memorial Day weekend, three of the four
participants in a 4-way playoff at the Nationwide Tour's SAS Carolina
Classic in Raleigh, NC, were playing Callaway Golf drivers and golf
balls, including the winner, who used the HX Tour Golf Ball and Great
Big Bertha(R) II 415 Driver as well as a Big Bertha Strong 4-wood.
Tour results are through the week ending 05/30/04 and reflect data
