Excellent quaily materials combined with excellent craftmenship that makes for top of the line cloths for golfers world wide. It has been a pleasure for mnself and my wife to test and review some golf apparel from each of the companies that Mary Beth represents, and I can give you my personnel first hand recommendation for every company products in my last post about the stull Mary Beth repersents. Will check it out Don.  Would not mind picking up some nice shirts for next season.  I was looking at the Loudmouth site thinking they might have something on clearance I liked...but didn't see much.  DId like a PBR golf pants they had..yes, I did type PBR!!!  Those were cool but not for $125.

Not sure that I'll gear up any this Christmas. Just don't quite need anything.  Have balls, new irons, happy with the driver and FW woods.  Maybe a new hybrid but I don't know.  We'll see.

Need to decide whether to renew my Skycaddy membership or not.  I've had it for years but honestly, the new range laser finder I bought last year has worked so well I don't use the Skycaddy much at all. It comes in real handy playing a course I've never played very much so I can see what trouble waits ahead.  But I've only played a handfull of rounds like that this year.  So is that worth $60 a year???   Not sure.

Not that it's Golf gear but...it's Black Friday next week..I'm seeing Target and BB having $150 49" TVS and $250 55" TVs.  While great deal, not sure I want to stand in line for it.  I'll see what I can find online :)

SkyCaddy plans

I recently got an email from Sky Caddy. Seems you can get a 3 year plan for up to 3 GPS units for $120.00 if I remember correctly. That lowers the cost to $40 per year which is better than $60 at least. I currently have two Sky Caddy units, both are the SGXw models. I got them used about the time the new Touch was announced but not yet shipping. I have NOT purchased a plan yet so I don't know for sure if the both work okay, and I'm a bit hesitint to buy a plan when I don' t know if the units work okay or not. I wonder if there is a way to TEST the SGXw units BEFORE i buy a plan? I guess I could contact Sky Caddy and ask them if there is a way to test the two untis some way.

Like you, I too have a really good laser range finder that I use on every hole for distance to the flag on Par 3's and appraoch shots on longer holes. And like you, I'm not sure it's worth paying $40 or $60 a year to have the SkyCaddy available.

So at one point I had a Fitbit but returned it because, being the old version, I started having breakouts on my arm from the nickle in the band clasp. Anyway haven't had one since but today on Amazon I saw a cheap tracker, not a major brand but for $15 I figured it's worth a try.  Not out much if it doesn't work well.   Just passing along the info incase anyone else is interested in trying it.

Otherwise, ... not bought much golf related stuff this holiday season. Did by a new (used) SUV so that's probably enough :)   Merry Christmas!

I noticed an advertisement

I noticed an advertisement for the Garmin Vivoactive smart watch at Golftown on Black Friday.  It was on sale for $199 up here.  I was tempted until I did a bit of research and discovered that it wasn't compatable with my model of cell phone.  King of pointless then as I believe that the golf gps app worked through a bluetooth link to your smart phone.  They are steeply discounted everywhere it seems so I assume that an improved model is soon to be released.

DON
Fit Bit clasp

If you go online you can find after market Fit Bit bands with NON metal clasps. Not sure exactly what the clasp is made of but I assume it's some kind of plastic instead of metel like the factory band comes with. Some of the after market bands sell for as little as $1.00 each, so this would be an option for you if you wanted to try the Fit Bit again, and NOT have to deal for the metal clasp bothing your arm.

Good to know Don.  I'm

Good to know Don.  I'm guessing the clasps on the new devices aren't nickle based but still good to know as a resource in case.  We'll see how this $15 model works...I liked the fitbit but mainly as a pedometer and general idea of calorie burn.  Not that either are terribly accurate from what comparisions I've done, but it's still a decent ballpark.

So this golf game digital

So this golf game digital assessment tool has come wasy down in price.  Originally was around $200 or more now, it's $125 or so.  Not sure how long that pricing will last.  I thought about buying it at that price but I'm not sure how much I'd use it.  I tend to remember each shot of my round and sort of know who far and how well I hit it.  But I do struggle with that on course I don't play much.  BEcause I just can't remember the hole layout.  but if you're someone who wants to really track each shot of each round and do that over time to learn things like "shoot, I usually miss the green left when I am hitting from 160 yards out", then this might help with that.  I wouldn't mind having one of these and getting a year down the road and looking at what tendencies I have after 50 rounds of golf gets into it.  But not sure if I'd use it consistently enough to get to that point.  I don't know.

DON
New Model out

The reason they have the unit on sale now for around $125 is that the company now has a NEW model jout coming out that does MORE then the original model did. For one thing you can use it as a GPS unit to get the yardages on the course, something to old model did NOT do. I think the new model sells for around $300, so they are selling off the old models at a decent discount.

So I just got one of the

So I just got one of the Kodak wi-fi home camera's that ties into your smart phone.  I bought it on a cyber week deal at amazon for like $69 but i think it's normally $99.  The link to it is here.

But it works well.  Kinda frustrating to get setup, I had to install the IOS app as the Android app never saw the camera.  Essentially you download the app, power up the camera, wait 2 minutes, then point your smart phone or tablet's wifi to the wifi network being broadcast by the camera.  Then the app is supposed to detect the camera and let you set it up.  Didn't work on the Android app but it did on the IOS.  So I set it up there and then it showed up on the Android.  Other than that problem it's been ok.  Some neat features...since I sometimes leave my 10 yr old here while I run an errand, i can see what's going on in the house and make sure everything's still standing.  Then it also lets me "talk" to him by sending audio from my phone through the camera.  He can hear me and I can hear him.  tried that today and it worked well.

Kodak offers lifetime "1 day" recordings where it will store them for you, and if you want to retain videos longer you can pay subscritpion fees, but for me, the 1 day free is all I need.

Thus far, I think it's neat.  From anywhere I can get a network connection on my mobile device I can see my living room.  Oh the camera is color, HD, and supports Pan and till so I can move the camera left or right or up and down.  And I can hear audio from the house.  So for $70 it was easily a good deal.  i think it's good at $100 too.

So I had a $20 gift card to

So I had a $20 gift card to the Deal Caddy site of Golfnow.  Had been watching their site and not found anything I wanted to buy.  Then one day they actually had something I had been interested in trying for a long time...a dozen Polara golf balls.  You know, the illegal ones that have non-conforming dimple patterns?  Well they have 2 primary series, the "straighter ones" and the "longer" ones.  This deal was for 6 of each.  Now I just had watned to try them to see if they were longer, so I could try and outdrive one of my long hitting buddies when we go down to the beach.  Anyway, then thought I'd have a buddy of mine, who usually hits a big fade, to try and hit the straight ones to see if they really work.    Mainly curiosity but they arrived today so maybe I'll get  a chance to play around with them in the next month.

I found one of those balls while playing back in the summer.  I carried it around with me for about three weeks before I was tempted to hit it, as you say, just to see.

One day, I was having a particularly bad day off the tee and had lost a few balls.  The Polara was the next one I pulled out of the bag and I thought; Oh well, now is as good a time as any.

Whack.  Thud!  Worst feeling shot of the entire season!  I must have caught the ball heel side of the driver.  Blocked it straight into a hazard; a hazard I normally have no problem carrying as it was only about 180 off the tee!

I've only ever run across one person that played Polara balls regularly and she swore by them.  At Pro V1 prices, life is too short.  If you need that kind of help to straighten out your drive take a lesson or three.  That was the most terrible feeling golf ball I'd ever hit!

So played golf Friday with

So played golf Friday with some co-workers, one of home only took up the game a couple years ago.  He plays fine but shoot around 100, myabe 94 on a good day.  Well I figured he would be a good test of of the Polaris 'straight' balls that I got from DealCaddy.  I figured as often as he hits fades/slices, it would be a good test of whether the ball does what it claims.  Well, I would say it does.  he hit the ball straighter than I've ever seen him.   He hit more fairways and more greens that he usually does.  Didn't score any better because he had 4 bad blow up hoels where he chunked shots badly and scored 8's and 9's.  But other than that, he had more bogeys than doubles.  It appears to be shorter he felt than his normal balls go but he was usually in better shape.  Two guys we played with didn't know he was using them and complimented him on the 14th hole on how well he was driving the ball that day.

I was going to try one of the long balls but only used it on one hole where I didn't put a good swing on it so no review of that yet.  Next time perhaps.

very interesting, always assumed it was marketing hype but from your friend's experience seems like they really do what they say!

Yeah, I thought the same

Yeah, I thought the same thing Aimee.  But I'm now pretty convinced that they do work.  And I don't care if he uses them.  if he enjoys the game more, great.  I think he may use them some, maybe on bad swing days, but i think in general he wants to improve his swing so i think he'll use a regular ball mostly, but like I said, as long as he has fun, I'm fine with whatever.

Top Flite also

Top Flite used to sell the LX3000 Straight balls about 15 years ago. It was the same idea. a ball that did NOT spin very much and a dimple pattern that did NOT creat a lot of lift, so the ball went straighter off the tee. Good balls for the new golfer that fights a slice or hook.

nothing for me...although when hubby was cleaning our bags after Sunday's round (presumed to be the last for the winter) he found two Titleist DT SoLo's for me in the bottom of one of his pockets. He got gift certificates for Global Golf and another online retailer that he likes, I think he's continuing his quest for the magic driver to cure his swing problems. Since the instructor that he liked is moving back to Florida and not coming back to NJ, I couldn't get him lessons this year for a gift.

3 Stents for Christmas

got to spend Christmas in the hospital after have 3 stents implaced in my heart on Christmas Eve.  Now I'm trying ot figure out what I can east that tastes good. NO more salt or fats in my diet, so just about every thing that tastes GOOD is not what I can eat. No Pizza, No Potato Chips or Ice Cream. Seems like if it tastes good I can't eat it. Not much fun but at least I've lost a few pounds, since nothing I can eat is of much interest. Scared the HELL out of my poor wife, She wasn't sure I was coming home after I had to go to the hospital fater feeling VERY light headed and my chest and left arm was hurting.

Don,

Don,

Glad to hear that you made it out the other side with your health scare.  I had one of those in February on our way down to Florida.

You'll adapt to the new dietary restrictions.  You will come to discover that things other than fat and salt add flavour to food such as aromatics, herbs and spices.  It's just a matter of learning a new lifestyle so-to-speak.  It beats the heck outta the alternative of pushing up daisies!

On the golf front, i bought myself a gift of sorts a couple of weeks before Christmas and it was delivered on New Year's Eve -- a part set of Golden Ram Axial Tour Grind Frequency Matched irons.  These are true blade irons the likes of which were played by Tom Watson, Tom Kite and Nick Price back in the day when they were staffers with Ram Golf.  Should be fun!

DON
Doing Okay

Doing okay after the heart surgury. Had an EKG on Tuesday and the doctor that did the surgury said it looked a lot better than the one they did before the operation. So that's a good sign. I have a follow-up Electro Cardiogram set for The first Wednesday of Feburary to see how the heart is pumping blood, and that will determine how long I need to keep wearing the heart monitor/Defibulater vest. So I get to wear the vest for at least another 3 weeks or so. Getting used to the Low salt, Low Fat diet a bit. Eating just is NOT as much fun as it was since just about everything that tastes good is NOT on my allowed food list. Only good thing about my new diet is that I've lost a few pounds since I went into the hospital.
