Cyber shopping

Anyojne find any Black Friday or Cyber Monday golf deals?   - I have not shopped at all for either day yet...I guess I look now while watching Monday Night Football

DON
NO NEW Golf.toys for me.

I did NOT do any shopping for golf related toys this year. I got myself the Titleiest AP2 irons awhile back and that's enough for one year for me. Truty is I do NOT need any golf toys this year nor the last half dozen of so. I pretty much have ALL the clubs I will ever need or want. Same for golf balls or other golf related items. About the ONLY golf item I did look for online was a new driving NET. The one I have is at least 18 years old and could do with a replacement about now. With Covid 19 still going strong, I'm thinking it would be SMART to hit balls in my backyard iinto a net tather than going to the drivving range and be around a couple dozen idiots that do NOT wear a mask. YES, It's more fun to go to the range and hit balls down range, BUT it's NOT worth dieing for.

Agree Don.  I actually didn't

Agree Don.  I actually didn't even look at like Golf Galaxy sales online.  I sort of do want to look at upgrading my old 4 hybrid - but as I look at some used places, I'm not ready to pay $150 for something used yet.  So I'll keep waiting.
The year I setup a net and used it 20 minutes a day my ball striking got a lot better.   Even though I couldn't really tell where the ball would wind up like at the range, I could feel whether I hit it solid or not.  And try different things.   I just probably havet spent the money to get one good enough to last.    And the mat wore out. But now I don't practice, I just go play and use that as my practice.

DON
When I used my net daily

I got my net not long after I started play this crazy game, and I hit a small bucket of balls into the net just about every day for months on end. One thing I did was I ran THREE lines down the center of the net, top to bottom. The center line was WHITE and the other two were YELLOW. When I setup I would setup in the center of the net and AIM at the WHITE vertical line. If i hit the line GREAT. If the ball hit inside the two Yellow lines I called it good enoug to find the fairway. OUtside the two Yellow lines was BAD. As with you, my ball striking got really good with daily practice hitting into the net. I even got cocky at one point and built myself a 1 iron just to see if I could hit it. Didn't do too bad with it after a little practice, NOT good enough to put it in the bag, but good enough that I NEVER worried about having to hit my 3 iron during a round. I know that if I could hit a 1 iron even half way decent, my 3 iron was a  piece of cake.

Check out GoodWill for a mat

go over to GoodWill and see what they have in the way of a used rug that you could use as a mat. should be able to pickup something usefull for less than $10 I would think. As for a net, there are lots of them on E-bay in the less than $50 range. I think I paid around $30 for the driving net I got about 18 years ago, steel frame and net combined. Sill works okay. I'm in the works of cleaning up the steel tubing and then I'll spray it with a few coats of Rustoluem to keep it in decent shape. Should last another 20 years if I do a good job on it. Check your local home improvement store for netting also. They might have some netting that was made for fencing off areas that would work as long as the holes in the net at NOT too big. Landscrape netting is worth a look.

As for a 4 hybrid, I would recommend you see what you can find in the way of a Ping Rapture. It's the ONLY hybrid I liked when I tried them all. I paid less then $125 for it brand new a long time ago, so they should be available for a decent price online.

DON
Ping 21* are available on E-bay

I just looked online and I found a lot of Ping Rapture hybrids available for under $60, and as low as $30. My 3 hybrid is a 18* club, and the 4 should be the 21* club, Some listing have the 4 as being 24*, but that is wrong, that's the 5 hybrid not the 4. MY 3 18* 3 came with a JAVLN Fx Stiff flex shaft in it and it's still in there. I DID do a FLO alignment on the shaft, but it played very well as it came, so you might get away with the factory shaft also. Ping made the Rapture with MORE than one shaft as stock, so you might have to look around for the JAVLN shaft if you care. Check them out when you get a chance. They are the ONLY hybrid I could hit well enough to even thing about buying, and used they are a LOT LESS than the $150 you mentioned.

This one has the same shaft

This one has the same shaft as mine only in R flex. It's a 21* 4 hybrid, NOT a 3 as listed. IF you think you can use an R flex, this one might be worth a look.  Have Fun Shopping Scott.

Quite late to the party with

Quite late to the party with respect to the question at hand, but I did get a few deals during Black Friday/Cyber Monday sales.  Did my wife a solid and got her a few items that she can stick in my stocking. wink

Got a 2 for 1 deal on FootJoy WeatherSoft gloves and the new Lamkin Sonar Plus Wrap Calibrate grips.  Will try these reminder grips on a couple of drivers I rotate through.  I also got a deal on some Wilson Staff Duo Optix balls in high viz green with the 2nd doz. at half off.

DON
I think you will LIKE the grips.

I hope you like the new grips. I sure like the ones I made for my clubs. Rather than buy new grips for $11.49 each. I figured out a way to add a RIB to the shaft, and then slide a standard grip over the rib I installed. Since I have lots of new grips on hand it was a much cheaper way to go and a lot faster as I did not have to wait for new grips to be deliveried. End result is the same reminder rib style grip for less money, just a little more work. Let us know how you like the grips when you get a chance to hit a few balls with them.

PIng Rapture 21* Hybrid w/TFC 909H Stiff Graphite *Fair* | eBay

This one has a STIFF flex shaft, so that's a plus. And the head is in okay shape, nothing that could not be cleaned up with a piece of sand paper and a block of wood powered by a little elbow grease/ $40 total is pretty reasonable I would think. Worth a try at least.

Didn't buy anything for golf (except for more base layer/thermals). Callaway Pre-owned has had some good deals, but I just haven't been playing well enough to feel like getting any new clubs (it is time for new hybrids, possibly). It is the Carpenter, not the Hammer. I do keep my eyes open for shoes, however. Can never have too many...rotating is good when you walk all the time, plus over time the waterproof properties diminish at the seams. And I'm not treating them/coating them...after a couple of years it's OK to replace them.

It's not how...it's how many

Have you heard about GolfKicks? They sell an aftermarket kit that you use to install spikes in a pair of athlete shoes. Sells for $32 for the set of 20 spikes and the tool needed to install them. So if you have a FEW pairs of good athlete shoes that are really comfortable, you might consider installing spikes in them and using them to play golf instead of buying new golf shoes. Save a little $ and get more use out of a pair of shoes you KNOW are comfortable to wear.

I tried to find something to buy LOL...but I just never saw anything...have too many golf balls..just bought the Sunday bag...so I guess I have just spent too much HA

Bingo

A bit late to the party, but Callaway Pre-Owned had a hot sale today with 40% off the Big Bertha (2019j hybrids that I had been eyeing. I pulled the trigger, I usually don't like buying without ever hitting a model, but I have always had good luck with Callaway. For $150 including tax and shipping for 2 clubs, low risk. I did not trade in my old hybrids just in case. I'm sure they have little value at this point, anyhow, plus Michael's son's girlfriend used to play golf and he's been giving them our old clubs to encourage them to start playing together.

Nice Aimee.  Thats not a bad

Nice Aimee.  Thats not a bad price for 2 and of the 2019 models.  I haven't bought from them in a while but when I did things were usually better condition than their ratings.  Good luck with them

hybrids

Received the clubs Tuesday night, looks like it will be warm enough to go to the range on Friday so I'll give them a whack. They have adjustable heads (came with tool), I have them both set to std loft and neutral. You can increase or decrease the loft and set the face for draw bias. Since hybrids often want to hook, I think I'll start with neutral. Condition was pretty much as expected, a little scratching on the face. One club had "demo" on the butt end of the grip, but they are both the same shaft/grip type.

Friday was kind of nuts with

Friday was kind of nuts with work, so we went on Saturday - not the nicest of days, only about 45 degrees, but no warm days coming up so I put on my winter golf gloves and hit in one of the semi-enclosed stalls. First off, the shaft may be a bit longer than my old clubs. Initially, I gripped down a bit, but I got used to it quickly. I hit the 5h first, and the face looks big and lofted...which is not a bad thing for encouraging the feeling of "easy to get the ball up in the air". Sound is pretty good, I don't love it vs some clubs I've hit in the past, but you can tell when you hit the ball solidly. Hard to tell distance on a cool day with range balls. My true test will be when I actually play and have certain par 3's where I use my hybrids and know what the "real" distance is. Generally I'll say I'm satisfied and will keep them. When it warms up I'll want to hit old vs new side by side to get some perspective.

I did a bit of post Christmas

I did a bit of post Christmas cyber shopping myself to top up my wife's stash of consumables.  The deal that was available that I took advantage of earlier was still in play so I got her 2 doz. WS Duo Optix balls in pink and a two pack of FJ WeatherSoft gloves.  I was a few bucks short of free shipping so I grabbed a Bushnell Neo Phantom handheld GPS device for $100.  It's about the size of a pager and intuitive to use.

After playing with a couple of different fellows this past year who had GPS watches I found that it was quite an advantage to have an accurate distance for approach shots, particularly those that have to be played from the rough at odd angles to the green.  It's easy using markers when you're in the fairway, but always had been a guess from the weeds.

I downloaded the app onto my phone and set-up my account while the device was charging and downloaded a few of the courses that I play regularly.  I'll add more once we get closer to the start of play.  There's a belt clip for the device.  It's also magnetic so it can stick to your push cart frame or the canopy frame on a power cart.  I purchased a neon green model so that I hopefully won't leave it behind which I thought could be a real risk with standard black unit.  The buttons are pretty small, but the GPS cycles through the menu easily so I'm thinking that it should be easy to use in play.  Batunction.tery life is about 7 hrs, so good for a couple of rounds between charges.  The phone app has a score-keeping function.

GPS

Scomac, I think you will find having a GPS is very helpful in exactly the situation you mention, off the fairway and no markers visible. I think they speed up play...I clip mine on my golf bag, so as I get to my ball, I glance at it and can immediately pull a club.

Agree.  GPS is valuable...and

Agree.  GPS is valuable...and now the price is such that it doesn't break the bank and I think it probably saves the average Joe a couple strokes a round on those extra chips because you didn't have the right yardage on approach shots.

DON
Picke up a Ping Rapture 4 Hybrid after checking them out 4 Scott

After looking for a 4 hybrid like the Ping Rapture 3 Hybrid I have, I found a few that were CLOSE to what I have, but not exaxtly. I didning find ANY of them with the same make and model shaft as my Ping has, and none with a Stiff flex shaft of the same model. So after looking for a good 4 hybrid for Scott, I decided to pick up a 4 hybrid with a R flex shaft, and just pull the shaft and install a new S flex after market shaft as an experiment. I do NOT need a 4 hrbrid so when I'm done with my experiment it will be getting sold at some point.

After I pulled the factory shaft, I installed a nice ProForce V2 Hybrid shaft in it after I did a Spine and FLO alignment on the shaft. I then added a reminder Rib to the shaft and installed a new grip over the rib. After hitting my 3 hybrid with the rib grip, I'l tollally SOLD on the rib style of grips. FEELS good in my hands and they perform very well on the range with every club I've used them on.

All I have to do now is to take the 4 hybrid out to the range and hit some balls with it to see if it performs as well as my 3 hybrid does. Forecast is for nice weather by Thursday so I should now before long how my new club works. Wish me luck and I'll post my results when I get back.

DON
My range session went very

My range session went very well this week. I hit the     AP2 irons to warm up and then hit my 3 hybrid and then the new 4 hybrid. First swing with my 3 hybrid was about perfect, right down the target line with a speed of 108 MPH according to my SwingSpeedRadar unit. Not sure if this is real accurate or not but it's about what I get when I'm swing that club well. Got about the same speed with the 4 hybrid as well, with a top speed of 110 MPH one time. I was having an issue with the 4 hybrid hitting the ball LOW on the club face. That might be due to the 4 having a lower swing weight than what I'm used to in my clubs. For some reason the 4 came out with a SW on only D0, which is low for my liking. I"ll have to add some weight to the head if I'm going to keep the club, which is NOT a given as I don't really need it in my bag. Most of the balls I hit with it were being hit LOW on the face and not going very high. But when I did manage to make contact in the middle of the face I got pretty good results and a nice high ball flight and NO signs of the Fade I was getting from the club with the factory installed shaft. The factory shaft was NOT FLO aligned and that is the reason I was getting the Fade ball flight with the club as it was built. Now the fade is gone as I expected with the new shaft.

I even got on GOOD terms with the AP2 4 iron this time out. Not ready to play it on the course just yet, but we are getting along much better than last time out. More good shots than bad this time. Most if not all of the bad shots were due to me NOT hitting balls for almost a month. Hard to blame the clubs when I hit bad shots with a wedge in my hands. That's ME, not the club I'm afraid. Maybe I can get out again next week and NOT wait so long between range sessioms

GOOD NEWS folks

I just got a Covid 19 Vaccine shot appointment set up today for this coming Monday, and then the second shot on March 8th. So by next month I should be all protected from this Covid garbage. Not that it will make a lot of difference as a lot of others will NOT have their shots for a long time yet. But at least I should be a lot safer soon which will be good. I know I will FEEL a lot better about going to the driving range after I have the shots. I"m NOT real comfortable hitting balls when there are others at most 10 feet away, especially when NO one is wearing a mask other than ME.

DON
I got SHOT today

I gto my Covid shot this morning. Left the house at 9;00AM and got back home at 10;40am, so it took less than 2 hours in all. Got to my appointement right on time and signed in, then was told to have a seat and wait for my name to be called, Took less then 2 minutes to get called and get the shot. Pretty easy in all. Had to sit around for 15 minutes to make sure I didn't have a bad reaction to the shot, but then got to go home with no problems. It's been 3 hours since I got the shot and ZERO side effects  so far.

Had a bit of a worry last night. Went out with my dogs after the SupperBowl, and there was smoke and ashes in the air. Cold as well, around 17 degress. Turned out we had a wild fire at the state park about 3 miles South of me that was burning out of contril. burnsed about 150 acres before they got it put out. Came within 25 yards of some homes in the area, but no major damage was done. What was really odd, what that there was another fire burning on the west side of Denver yesterday as well. That one was at a golf course and it burned over 450 acres before they got it out. Very unusual for this time of year, so TWO on the same day is weird to say the least.
