New irons from Callaway: Apex Pro

Callaway Apex Pro Pirce: $1,099, steel; $1,299, graphite

A better-player extension of the new Apex line, the Pro model is aimed at players who want the workability and control associated with blades while also enjoying the benefits of some forgiveness.

1020 Carbon Steel forging engineered to deliver a soft and responsive feel that the best players in the world demand/ Forged from carbon steel for enhanced feel, the Apex Pro features 7-gram tungsten weights in the sole of the 3- to 5-irons for higher launch.

New, wider-spaced grooves allow for more control and consistent spin from a variety of lies. Lastly, the KBS Tour-V steel shaft [mid launch, low torque] is based on feedback from Phil Mickelson.

The Callaway manager of performance analysis Evan Gibbs suggests the lower CG of the long irons adds about 1 mph of ball speed to the clubs over prior models, and the higher launch it creates makes them more forgiving as well. But in the short irons, where better players tend to create too much spin, the CG was moved higher to help golfers control their trajectory.

Callaway was able to accomplish all this without negatively impacting the feel and sound of the irons even though the face of the iron is 17% thinner than the X Forged irons. Extensively milling the iron's cavity made this possible.
