Rancho Canada Golf Club has two 18 hole courses the East and West course of the two I prefer the West course it is a little longer and a lot tougher. The additional yardage combined with the narrow fairways make it a challenge if you are not hitting your drove straight. The good thing is it is not so long that you can not use your 3 wood on most of the drives if your driver is acting up. The course weaves back and forth across the Carmel River which may or may not have water in it depending on the time of year. The course was built in 1970 so it has a lot of mature trees that come into play on almost every fairway on the West course because the fairways are very narrow at points. The fairway bunkers are also place at strategic distances so you have to plan your drives to avoid them sometimes making the course play longer than it is. The greens are mostly flat and are not real challenging. Although approach shots need to be managed if coming in from more than 150 yards away I found myself having to allow room for the hardness otherwise my ball would bounce and roll off the green. There are a lot of sycamore trees and cottonwood trees so if you suffer from allergies like me make sure you take along some good allergy medicine or your trip could be spoiled. If you live in the area you might want to look at the mini membership package for the best rates not only at Rancho Canada courses but also includes Laguna Seca Golf Ranch. If you don’t live in the area and want to play early like me the best way to go is to book your tee time online. Specials on the weekend rates are 29% off on the Rancho Canada web site. Bigger discounts as much as 60 percent can be found on week days. Or if you are willing to play after 2:00 PM the rate is almost half of the regular cost and you can finish up well before it gets dark. Play moves fast on the West course as management encourages high handicappers to play the east course which is almost as beautiful but not quite as difficult. Don’t get me wrong this is not a real hard course is a par 71 the rating is only a 70.2 with a slope of 124 and that is pretty accurate. The 6357 yard course will test your golfing skills. You do have to use good course management to stay out of trouble. It is a fun course with a lot of scenic views we took a lot of pictures this time. We played yesterday morning. Friends brought me up for my Birthday and after our game we went to the marina at Monterey and had a great seafood lunch. There are a lot of nice courses, restaurants and winery’s in the area and we plan on visiting as many as we can this weekend. This was the fourth time playing this course and I plan on coming back again.
