Del Monte Golf Course or more affectionately known to locals as Old Del Monte was designed by Charles Maud it first opened in 1897. The course is a par 72 and has a slope rating of 122 and plays 6,339 yards. Although it is not a long course it can be difficult. The fairways are lined with Monterey pines, oaks, and Cypress trees. There are plenty of deep bunkers and the small target greens are sloped and fast making them a challenge to hit and even harder to master. Even on a bad day most golfers will find enjoyment in the beautiful scenic layout. Del Monte Course is the oldest course in continuous operation west of the Mississippi river. Some think it is the Presidio course because it opened in 1895 but it did not have continuous service. There is talk that the course is going to get some upgrades if a pending deal goes through. Clint Eastwood Arnold Palmer and other investors like the Pebble Beach Company and Peter Ueberroth see the value in this great old course.
The course is situated inland on the Monterey Peninsula just minutes from Pebble Beach Golf Course, Spy Glass and Poppy Hills. The Hyatt Regency Monterey Resort and Spa on Del Monte Golf Course is a great place to stay and play. I go there a lot and make my reservations using the price line service and usually pay 100 to 110 dollars for a very nice suite that has a price tag of $300 plus. Use the name your price feature and bid 110 dollars and request a 3 1/2 star hotel in Monterey Bay. There are only two hotels that fit this criteria and the Hyatt is the only one that will accept that price. It is a good bet that you will get it the first try. Most people do not know about this but it is a great way to go.
Some of the things I remember most about this course are the seventh hole it is not very long at 380 yards but it is all uphill with trouble in every direction. You will need to hit a long straight tee shot uphill to an elevated green that has three tiers and is hard and fast. This is the toughest hole on the course for me. Another difficult hole is the second it is only 328 yards from tee to green. So if you are not greedy and you manage to hit a nice fairway wood off the tee and into the narrow fairway you will have a chance to make a birdie. Hit it too far and you will go through the fairway and into a bunker taking the green out of the equation. Long hitters won’t have a problem with the 503 yard thirteenth. The tee shot needs to go over a deep ravine and the hole plays easy once you get over it. The last hole can be a little tricky it is a 370 yard par 4 with a menacing oak tree that will block you out if you don’t keep your tee shot on the right side of it. Over all the course is a lot of fun with many memorable holes. It is kept in great shape. The best time to play is twilight when the weather warms up and the price goes down.
The restaurant at the course is a great place to eat breakfast with indoor and out door seating and a great view of the first tee and the ninth green. Staying at the Del Monte Hyatt you will be 4 miles from the Monterey marina and the famous Monterey Bay Aquarium. There you will find fine dining, live music, great shops and fun night life. If you are planning a trip this is one to consider.
