The Palo Alto course is a good bargain for the money especially if you go on line and register to get the deals. The course was designed by William Bell and opened 52 years ago. I never heard of William Bell but it is a fun course the front nine is predictable but the back nine gets real interesting with a lot of elevation changes and harder shots. There are four sets of tees it is a par 72 18 hole course that measures over 6800 yards from the longest tees. The greens are not consistent so it can be a difficult because some of the greens have been rebuilt and play different than the newer greens. Most of the fairways have had work done on them so they are well defined but not well maintained. You will find a lot of dead spots on some fairways that have patches of dirt instead of grass. Basically the grounds crew keeps the place mowed and not much more. So it is no country club but I love playing the back nine. If you are planning to walk it I would recommend a pull cart for the hills. The first hole is a dog leg right and from the tee box it is hard to tell where the fairway is so watch the group in front of you. The third hole is a long par three that is the 15 handicap hole but I think it is one of the harder holes on the front. The fourth hole is rated the number one hole but I had no trouble birding it so I am not sure how they rated it. The par 3 11th is a short par 3 over water and is not hard but make sure you take an extra club it plays longer than what it says especially in the morning. I had a good round on this course and shot 3 under my index but I think it was more the course than my play. The driving range is kind of hokie with machines that don’t always work and gofers running all over the field. But the pro shop has some nice things and the staff is very helpful. The grill is a good place to have lunch. Sit at the bar the bar tender is real friendly and very entertaining.
