Poppy Hills is a very prestigious course that if you are an NCGA member you don’t want to miss out on. The course is the first to be owned and operated by an amateur golf association and in my opinion the best. Members get a big discount. We played on Sunday for 70 bucks just by showing our NCGA cards. The public rate is $200.00 on a Sunday Morning. If you are not familiar with the course it is one of the courses used in the AT&T Pro Am every February. In 2006 it was rated as the toughest of the three courses in the AT&T Pro Am. So it can be set up to play very difficult. I took this into consideration when I chose to play from the blue tees rather than the championship tees. The first hole is one of the most difficult opening holes I have played. It is important to stay on the left side it looks wide from the tee but the fairway slopes and anything on the right can get you in trouble. The water is on the right side and starts at about 270 yards out and continues all the way up the left side to the green. The fifth hole is rated 3 handicap and has been rated as one of the toughest par fours in the PGA but as long as you get a good tee shot and hitting from the blues I did not find it that bad. The par 5 fourth hole is a lot harder to me. It plays 520 from the blues and first dog legs right and then dog legs left with fairway bunkers at every turn. This hole can play very long if you do not stay on the correct side of the fairway. The par 5 tenth is only about 500 yards from the blues but is uphill to a sloping fairway that plays a lot longer. If you can get up the hill on your tee shot and avoid the bunkers on the left it is not so bad otherwise you will be hitting a blind second shot. The green is protected by water on the left and bunkers on the front and back making getting home in two a risk reward situation. The sixteenth hole is very intimidating with a large bunker waiting for you on your tee shot stay to the left and you will have a narrow entrance to the dog leg right. If you make it to the turn you will have a long second shot into a well protected green that has bunkers almost surrounding the entrance to an undulating green so aim for the middle. The finishing hole is one of my favorites it is a great par 5 that can be reached in two for the correct tee. It is a dog leg left that gives you plenty of room on your tee shot as long as you avoid the bunkers on the right it opens up after that. There is an old pine about 50 feet tall that looks thin on the right side of the green check it out before starting your round so you can see it up close it catches a lot of balls. This course is majestic will the big mature trees and lush fairways and greens. There is nothing like the scenery in the Carmel area. It is one of the most beautiful places to play golf. If you want to play on a PGA course that does not cost an arm and a leg this is your best bet.
