Castlewood is a private club with two courses the Hill course which is on built into the hills and the Valley course is built down near the road with more trees and water. The views are tremendous and the course layout is really made to make the most of the land that it is built on. If you go as a guest it is 70.00 for a round. I have played there in tournaments, in the Hit & Giggle event that is held every Friday during the summer, and a few times during the week.
IThe course has a newly renovated club house that is one of the finest in the San Francisco Bay area. The driving range is large and deep enough to practice with all your clubs. The putting green is a 6500 foot area that has all combinations to practice on. The club is very competitive in tournaments with over 100 members that have single digit index. What makes the Valley Course so challenging is the length, topography and very fast greens. If you are planning to walk the Valley course is more suited to that then the Hill Course. One of the holes that I really enjoy is the third hole it is a 300 yard par 4. Sounds easy but it are not. It is rated as the number 7 handicap hole and for good reason. The fairway is a dog leg left and most people that first play this hole try to go for it. At the turn the fairway gets real narrow and fast. So if you are just a little off on your draw you will be in the trees and blocked out from the green. If you do not draw enough and you miss the turn you will be looking for your ball in the bushes. The green is deep and multi tiered. The sixth hole is a difficult par three that plays into the wind. There is a water hazard on the left and cost you a shot or two. The green is protected with bunkers on both sides. The green is big so use it just make sure you don’t go over because it will leave you OB. Play it smart on this one aim for the middle of the green and try to get out with a par. The thirteenth hole is the first of the long par fours. It is the number 3 handicap hole and is 444 yards. The fairway is wide so pull out the driver and nail it down the right side. If you have a missed shot on the left it is OB. This is a tough green and if at all possible try to get it on. The rough around the green can be very tough to get out of. The fourteenth hole can be an easy birdie but a missed shot could cost you. You have water in front and sand behind the green and on a windy day you just need to make sure you pick the right club. The fifteenth hole is my favorite hole on the Valley Course. It is the number one handicap hole and the 447 yards will test you. It can be a little intimidating from the tee you will be looking down a long narrow tree lined fairway with numerous bunkers along the way. You have to keep the ball in the fairway on this one. The green has a narrow opening and the ball moves fast when it hits. So a run up shot may be your best bet unless you can hit a good cut shot and then you want to go for the middle of the green. To finish the round you have a 358 yard par four that plays longer than it is. You need to hit your ball far enough down in order to avoid being blocked out by the large trees on both sides of the fairway. The green will hold your shot so be aggressive and try to land your ball as close to the pin as possible. This green can be very difficult because there are a lot of undulations that make a long putt into a double or triple break situation. If you are looking to join a private club this is one of the best around the staff are outstanding and the facilities are top notch. It is a great place to have a wedding reception because they will help you plan and will make your special day unforgettable. I have been to two receptions there and both have really been tops. The pool is not over used and is always kept very clean. The tennis club is very active and the pro there has a lot of activities for all skill levels. I highly recommend this club.
