The Presidio Golf Course is situated near the water near the Golden Gate Bridge. This course has a long history being the oldest course on the West Coast. There was a period where the Army took over the course so it does not qualify as the oldest continuous service. The Del Monte course in Monterey holds that honor. The course is lined with beautiful old Eucalyptus, oak and pine trees. The bunkers are deep and well lined. The course has only been open for public play since 1995 but already has a reputation as one of the premier public golf courses in the states. The course plays 6,500 yards has a slope of 136 and a rating of 72.3.
The Presidio course does not play real long unless the wind is up. I usually play late in the day so always am playing in the wind. But I like the challenge and love the low rate. The second hole is the first par five and is one of the more challenging holes on the course. Your tee shot is into the wind with tall trees on both sides. You need a tee shot placed on the right side of the fairway but if you are a long hitter there is a trap that is within reach. The ninth hole is another par five and is the longest hole on the course. This is a dog leg right with fairway bunkers, a narrow fairway and mature trees lining the fairway. So it is important to stay in the fairway or it will cost you a stroke or two. My favorite hole is the par three thirteenth a 175 yard hole with bunkers on both the left and right side of the green. Pin placement can make this a very difficult hole.
The finishing hole is a 516 yard par five that has a real narrow spot about 275 yards out with two fairway bunkers. So your tee shot will set the tone for this difficult finish. It is a fun course that requires course management and adjustments for wind. Paying attention will be the cheapest thing you pay for on this course.
Check out the monthly special rate for this course. For 39 dollars you can tee it up after 3:30 every day plus an 18 dollar cart fee. So that is under 20 dollars a day to play one of the best courses in the bay area. You can not beat that deal. There are a lot of specials on the web site so be sure to check it out. I have not taken lessons there but I did check out the practice area and it is set up real nice. I believe the large bucket was $10.00 and the small $3.00.
If you are planning a trip to San Francisco this is a must play course. It is one of the nicest public courses you are going to play and is a great value.
