The Pasatiempo Golf course is a 12 on a 10 point scale. The challenge of this par 70, 6500 yard course is beyond your wildest imagination, The amazing thing is it can be equally enjoyable to the high handicapper as MacKenzie's design allows alternate routes to the green. The low handicapper will marvel at hole after hole as he pushes the limits of this risk reward course. One of the things I look for when playing a course is at least 2 or three unforgettable holes. Pasatiempo has at least 12. Nearly every hole has something dramatic about it, whether it is the elevation change, multi tier sloping greens or difficult doglegs that hug the landscape. From the very start, this course is difficult. You get a breather from time to time, but it doesn't let up much. And don't let the 6,500 yards fool you, this par 70 plays long the designer uses the contour of the land to make shots play longer. The greatest golf course architect of all time is probably Alister MacKenzie...and this was his home course. He made sure you will have to use every club in your bag before the day is over. The price is a little steep, but it is definitely a course you should play at least once in your golfing lifetime. This is a course rich in golf history. Alister MacKenzie owned a house on the course itself. If you are not familiar with him he is also known for designing Augusta National and Cypress Point two of the most prestigious courses in the world. Golf Digest rates Pasatiempo as one of the top 3 courses you can play in California, and is ranked #31 in “Golf Digest’s 2005 America’s Greatest Public Courses.” Some of the more notable hole for me started with the first hole, you start on a long 460yd par 4 on a nicely elevated tee box. Make sure you hit driver on the range to get ready for this hole or it can be very difficult. One of my favorite holes was the 3rd, par 3, it is 217 yards, all up hill and into the wind. From the tee box it looks gorgeous with bunkers strategically placed around the green. I hit a 3 wood off the tee and still came up a little short and in the rough but was able to get up and down. Walking away with a par on this hole is an accomplishment. For the most part the front nine is laid out like a classic course. The back nine is a completely different course. To start you are greeted with a large ravine to carry your drive over, and then a fairly deep well protected green on 10. Just when you get past that you come to #11, probably the most difficult hole on the course. It is an uphill par 4 with only this time you have to carry the ravine on your second shot to a green with hazards on both sides. A long well placed drive and a long iron in and you will be just fine. I laid up and got up and down for a par. The back nine really requires a strategic shot off the tee to get a good angle into the green or you will have a difficult approach. The back nine was definitely more of a challenge than the front. The bunkers at Pasatiempo had a unique look to them. They blended in very naturally, The greens are a little on the slow side for the caliber of course that it is. That is most likeley the only relief you are going to find on this course. Off the course and on you will find the Pasatiempo staff available and helpful. Before your round it is great to go in get a cup of coffee and sit by the beautiful old world fireplace and warm up before your round. After your round you can go up to the Hollins House and get a table outside in the back overlooking the front nine and the Monterey Bay. On a clear day you can see Carmel across the water. I can say it doesn’t get any better than that.
