Tucked away in horse country is a beautiful colonial style clubhouse preceding the championship Rees Jones redesign golf course. The 2009 host of the U.S. Women's Mid-Amateur Golf Championship is flanked by towering oaks and pine trees, with tough fast bermada greens. I was lucky enough to play Golden Hills Golf and Turf Club during the 2009 U.S. Women's Mid-Amaterur Championship, and the course stands up to the challenge and difficulty needed for a USGA championship. Even though North Central Florida is going through a drought, the course remains in brillant condition. The staff did a wonderful job proctecting the greens. The surronding community and Bernadette Castro, the club's owner, went above and beyond making the competitors, tournament staff, caddies, and volunteers feel welcomed. Almost every hole presented a new challenge to the competitor. The only disadvantage to course is the par 4 10th hole. Playing about 390 yards, the tee shot required the player to play a shape shot with a dogleg right. The dogleg was not in the right spot leading most players to hit the play through the fairway. However, holes 11 and 12 makes up for the faults with a difficult par 3 and a long par 5. The tournament played at about 6200 yards, but it felt like more. With the thick bermada roughs, Florida breezes, and deep full sandtraps you were never short of a challenge. The country club is private but if you have the opportunity to play in horse country, do not pass up the chance.
