The Links at Firestone Farms is nestled in an impressive community of homes in Columbiana, Ohio. Approaching from route 14, it literally jumps out at you as the flat Ohio landscape gives way to this unexpected jewel, which is now about 7 years old according to the starter. As we were driving up from the entrance, you could just tell we were in for a great day of golf. Aside from it being a gorgeous morning, tee boxes and fairways visible from the road appeared to be in great condition and the first tee had one group teeing off and one group waiting, but didn't appear to be too congested.
From the moment we pulled up, the folks at Firestone Farms were friendly and welcoming. We were running a little late for our tee times due to the fact that my nav unit did not have the street the clubhouse was on. Fortunately, one of the rangers helped us get our cart set up and had already waved through the next group, and was also very understanding about the whole thing. From the starter, to the young lady working the snack bar, to the gentleman running the pro shop we felt customer service here was top notch. Some courses of this caliber make you feel like you should feel privileged to even be there, and while Firestone Farms certainly is in that bracket, the team there clearly was very hospitable.
As we began play, we noticed that tee boxes for the black middle tees were a little worn throughout the course. This was no real surprise as it was clear they received the heaviest play and the other boxes seemed to be in good shape, but regardless felt it was important to mention. Fairways, however, were in great shape. Cut nice and short, we experienced a lot of good roll through the day, especially as the sun started to burn off the morning dew. There were no excuses for poor iron play on the day we played.
The greens at Firestone Farms were well manicured - nice and tight and pretty fast. In my opinion the greens played a little small compared to the yardage and the number of obstacles on the course, which lent itself to a challenging target throughout the day. While well protected and fast, however, they were not particularly challenging from an undulation and break perspective. This may have been a good thing as getting to them in regulation seemed hard enough. Each person in our group made a couple longer than average putts, which always adds to the fun.
One thing's for sure here at the Links at Firestone Farms, if you come to test your skills, be careful what you wish for at this course. Slope rating from the black tees is a 127. A links style course, Firestone Farms has several areas of tall fescue, brutal rough, lots of water, well placed traps, and relatively long carries out of many of the tee boxes. There are several points on the course that even from the blacks, you need to be prepared for 200 yards of carry to get you safely positioned for your next shot - there is very little forgiveness from the tee boxes at this place. The large sand traps seem to be placed at every possible location that you could have a bad shot. As all three of us are basically average golfers, so this added up to one tough day. The great thing, though, was that this course forced us to play smart. When there's danger all around, you tend to back off things a bit and make sure you're playing the best, smartest shot possible. So while we all seemed to be struggling a bit this day, we welcomed the challenge and were really pleased to have found a course to play that is convenient to both Akron, and Pittburgh, where my buddies and I live respectively.
Last but not least it's important to note the facilities. The club house and pro shop are well stocked and organized, and not overly crowded or inaccessible as some can be. The snack shop had a nice selection of grub and liquid refreshment, but we were sort of surprised at the end of our round to find out there wasn't a bar and grille type of establishment on site. It would have been really nice to relax with a nice sandwich and a cold beer on an outdoor deck.
In summary, there's a reason why The Links at Firestone Farms was rated best new affordable public golf course in Ohio, and ninth nationally by Golf Digest in 2003. Great conditions, beautiful layout, a challenge for golfers of any level, and a reasonable price. We paid $45 for 18 and a cart on Saturday morning. Weekday fees are only $35! As we rolled out of the parking lot, we were all talking about how much fun it would be to come up during the week and play another round here. We're definitely coming back. I must agree with Chris. I was very impressed from the moment I pulled up. They also greeted my by cart in the parking lot, loaded my clubs on, and took me up to the clubhouse. Everyone was extremely friendly and really made me feel welcome. As for the course, good shots were rewarded and bad shots punished. At no time did I feel rushed to speed up play or get real frustrated with those in front of us when we caught up to them. Sinking a few 25 foot putts helped, too.
I look forward to going back in the very near future. Gerry on 2009-09-27 wrote the following regarding The Links at Firestone Farms:
There couldn't be a more friendly staff at Firestone Farms.WE were greeted with an atmosphere that they wanted us to enjoy ourselves. My son and I were matched with two others , and this was with thought that they cared about getting guys out there to play instead of waiting.
I liked the fact we couldn't tee off until the players made it to the green since the par 3 may possibly hold up play .That was more thought for us to enjoy. The flow of play was great , the greens fast and true and the overall vista of each hole made this a great experience ( our first time). The course was fair and (you) had to think and manage the course . There are four different tees for all range of players. There are safe areas for environment , and that causes drives to be placed properly . The fairways were tight and well kept. The rough was fair . The sand bunkers were imaculate. We played in a wind all day in our face , but it didn't matter , the course was playable and fun.
All the par 3 's were challenging( black tees) , the par fours had a good mix of short and long. The par 5's had heaps of trouble for wayward shots, but correctly placed shots cured that .
Number (16) is the #1 handicap hole and it deserved it . The green sloped , and the size was large , which made for a very tough hole .#15 , a par 3 over water was a beauty to behold. The approach to the par 5 on #14 with the water in the background was awe inspiring.Regardless of the final score in the card, if you didn't enjoy this course - blame yourself. We will be back again soon .(9/26/09)
