Eagle Point is a semi private club that is open to the public with memberships available for those that want to go that way. It is a Robert Trent Jones course and plays 7099 yards from the black tees and 5091 yards from the forward tees. The course is really designed to accommodate players of all skill levels. The club was selected in the top 10 public courses by Golf Week Magazine for 2007. The course is very plush and very well maintained. I played the course on a nice summer day in August of 2008.
The opening hole is not real long but is very challenging with strategically placed bunkers all along the fairway. Long hitters will want to start your round with a 3W if playing from the black tees to avoid the trouble. A good shot into the fairway with my three wood gave me about 165 to the pin. I was playing with a veteran so I knew to keep my approach to the right and my ball kicked to the left giving me a short putt for birdie. My sense of ease was interrupted on the second hole a 456 yard par 4 the number 3 handicap hole. It is a long hole but I had the wind at my back and was able to get the ball down far enough to be hitting a mid iron in. The green slopes toward the water on the left and even though I hit the green my ball bounce over and into some long rough behind the green and I walked away with a bogie. The fourth hole is a long 580 yard par 5 with 6 fairway bunkers that all come into play. I just missed the one in the middle of the fairway on my tee shot and was able to catch a break when my draw rolled up short of the bunker on the left side of the fairway. The middle part of the hole is like a links hole with rolling hills. I hit my approach shot from an uneven lie from 140 yards out to the postage stamp green and came up short in the green side bunker but was able to salvage par. This was not the hardest hole on the course for me. The par 5, 16th at 591 yards with a narrow tee shot where you are back in a group of tall trees it is very intimidating to look at. This hole was too long for me to have to worry about the cluster of bunkers that sit about 90 yards out from the green. What makes this hole so hard is a combination of the length requiring you to go for it on both your tee and second shot in order to get a decent shot at the green but the hazards that await an errant shot. This is a real risk reward hole with bunkers on one side of the green and water on the other side. The finishing hole is one that can be fun or frustrating depending on your drive. This hole requires a good drive to clear trouble. The fairway doesn’t even start till about 220 yards out from the back tees. This is the number 2 handicap hole with trouble at the start and finish. There is a large bunker guarding the front of this small green. The day I played the pin was on the right and the bunker was not really in play for me but had it been behind the bunker I would have had a problem. This is one of those courses you have to play a couple of times to get the feel for it. It is a course worthy of the Robert Trent Jones name.
While I was there we ate a late lunch at Arthur’s restaurant in the club house. The food was very good and the wine list is excellent. It is a quiet setting with picture windows all around with views of the 18 hole and a group of cascading waterfalls. The course is set near Ashland so if you ever need to go that way it is a must stop.
