Description: Transformed in 1958 from a farm into a public golf course, Rolling Green is the oldest public golf course in Washington County, Pennsylvania. It originated as a 9 hole public golf course, with meager green fees ranging from $1 for 9 holes on weekdays, to $2 for 18 holes on the weekends. The debut was a success and in the early 1960s a second nine was added. Although many of the holes were rearranged to accommodate this second nine, holes #1 and 9, although updated, are to this day still part of the original 9 hole layout. In the mid 1960s the game of golf was changed forever as motorized carts became more reliable and popular. Rolling Green acquired 6 par pony carts that were little more than a seat, steering arm, and battery. Many changes have occurred through the years, but to this day, Rolling Green remains owned, operated, and designed by J. Russell Wylie and family.

Rolling Green is one of those nice little courses, tucked away in the country, that is pretty well kept with lots of rolling hills and elevation changes, wide open fairways, and cheap greens fees. It's neither outstanding or a slacker, but somewhere in between. How about good value? Yeah, that's the ticket. This 6011 par 71 plays fairly easy, so every time out is usually a decent round. Don't get me wrong, though, there is definitely some challenge. Water comes into play on a few holes, but on number two, for some reason, even slicers head to left towards it. Something about the hole I guess. There are a couple well placed bunkers on this course, not many, but enough to make it interesting. Fairways can be tricky once in a while, and getting outside of them could mean a lost ball or two, but for the most part they're pretty wide. This is one of those courses where you can hit it into the next fairway, though, and still recover nicely. For a nice Sunday drive through the country, and a laid back 18, check this one out. You wont be disappointed, especially considering the rates. ChrisB on 2009-06-21 wrote the following regarding Rolling Green Golf Course:
So we went back to Rolling Green in Eighty Four, PA yesterday. A little pre-Father's Day round with my dad and a buddy. The first thing that struck me was how well drained the course was after a few flash flood days we've had in the Pittsburgh area recently. Fairways and greens were relatively dry and only a couple swampy spots around the course, but nothing that really came into play. Another thing that was a little frustrating on this day was that they had no starter, so the folks in the clubhouse/proshop were just letting groups go out as they may. We were backed up behind a 5-some of slow players, and sandwiched between two twosomes. Somehow, miraculously, we still managed to finish in 4.5 hours, however it could easily have been a four hour round. Fortunately, the weather cooperated for most of the day and it was enjoyable regardless. Rough was a little higher today and I actually had to take a drop for a lost ball on number 4. I saw the ball land from the tee, but just could not find it. With the ground being a little soft and the rough being a little high, I probably walked right past it I'm sure. Slope here from the whites is only about 107 if I remember correctly so this is not a difficult course, but the challenge will come if you don't stay in the fairways and with putting. Although the greens are cut OK, there seem to be different patches of grass growing there (evidenced by multiple shades of green) which can lead to sections that seem to be slightly raised or inconsistent in speed. In addition to these mounds, there are couple of two level or plateaued greens that will give your putting game fits. I don't believe slope ratings take this into account so be prepared for it to play a little tougher when you reach the short stuff.

You know, I basically agree with the other guy here, but I have a couple other points to make. First of all, they are now charging $35 for 18 with a cart, which I think is a little steep for this course. Rolling Green is OK for a western pennsylvania course, but still, $35? A little excessive in my opinion. Second, they hardly have any selection of balls or accessories in the Pro Shop. I mean, it's not really a Pro Shop, but still a little nicer selection would be nice. Lastly, if you plan to have a few beers with your buddies during your round - bring them yourself. You will not find them there as these guys do not appear to have a liquor license and do not sell beer. Not that these items are important to how the course actually is to play, but felt they were important to mention. Klun on 2009-09-03 wrote the following regarding Rolling Green Golf Course:
I played this course for the first time on Saturday. I played in a small outing with 6 other guys. We played the blue tees as the course is fairly short. Shot my best round of the year, but would have been better had I not had 4 blowup holes. As Chris mentioned in his previous reviews of this course, it is not too bad of a course for Western PA for the price. We had a good time playing and was able to finish in under 4 hours (but I think this had more to do with playing in a 3some and being the 2nd group out for the day)
The course is fairly well maintained and can be a little tricky once you reach the greens. There are a couple of short par 4s that can definitely be reach on your drive. Had I had a little better aim, I would have done this on both holes.
As this is just a little country course, the clubhouse is fairly empty with just a few gloves and sleeves of balls and it only has a small snack counter.
All in all, this was a fun little course to play and will definitely play again.
