New ownership took over the course a year ago and changed its name from Deer Run to Pittsburgh National Golf Club. It's a tree-lined layout with a lot of up and down holes. It was in good condition when we played it last week and will be even better when the greens heal from the recent aerification. It's very reasonably priced, $44 for 18 holes and the owners are committed to doing whatever it takes to get golfers to the course and then getting them back again. A nice place to play and one where you can go and enjoy your round. Sam Alberth on 2009-04-23 wrote the following regarding Pittsburgh National Golf Club:
This course does not get enough recognition. As the guy said above, it's very reasonably priced, and offers a fun layout that is forgiving enough to take a relatively new golfer, but offers plenty of challenge from the back tees. 7066 yards! That's pretty good for around here. One of my favorite holes though is the 584 yard (from the backs) number 2 and I also like number 11 which will take you 462 to an over water carry to the green. Just the thing to test your nerves as you're heading back out for the backside. And don't forget to stop in Jake's. Great food, and they have a killer steak special, but can't remember what day right now. Have fun, the trip will be worth it. To its credit, the new ownership at PN invested a great deal in repairing all the bunkers, hiring a professional staff, bringing the restaurant back to life, and replacing the old gas carts with electric carts with GPS. The downside, from a member's point of view, is that management has to pay for all of this, which means an extensive advertising campaign that has drawn flocks of golfers not competent to get around this difficult course efficiently, and outing after outing after outing, which not only draws scores of bad, slow golfers but cuts into available tee times. In fact, two Saturdays this season were effectively removed from play for the membership unless you were willing to tee it up in an early morning shotgun start! Um, you make the _outing_ do a shotgun, in the _afternoon_; you don't force your members into a shotgun start. Amazing.
PN (Deer Run) used to be run as a semi-private club that allowed public play at certain times. Under the new ownership, it's now a public course that offers a membership significantly devalued from previous years. Things have become so bad this year I've finally decided to take the plunge and join a local private club. As a serious golfer who wants to be able to play daily without navigating around outings and leagues and HS golf teams and hacks of ever stripe, the cost-benefit analysis has finally tipped me toward membership in a private club. And note this: the course at the private club I'm joining is old fashioned and not as much of a challenge as PN--still, I'm willing to make the sacrifice for my sanity and my game.
PN is one of the best tracks in the greater Pittsburgh area, but if you decide to give it a try, bring a gigantic bag full of patience (or beer, as most of the public generally does there these days). Of course, you'll need to buy the beer at the clubhouse for $12/six pack! No outside beer (no kidding).
