Philadelphia Country Club has a rich history. One of the most famous tournaments to be held at the Country Club was the 1939 U.S. Open. On the last hole Sam Snead took an 8 to lose the tournament. Snead only need a five to win the tournament. That did not end the excitement of the tournament. The tournament needed a playoff between Byron Nelson, Craig Wood, and Denny Shute. a second playoff was needed to determine the winner between Nelson and Wood. The best shot of the tournament came on the 4th hole (now the 17th) where Nelson hit a 1-iron perfectly into the hole. A marker in the fairway commemorates the shot. Recently the Women's U.S. Amateur in 2003 was played at the course. In 2005, the course help hold the first two days of qualifiers for the Marion U.S. Amateur. The golf is a gem. A great vintage golf course designed by William S. Flynn. The course does not offer a terrible hole. The course is long and demanding. The first hole is a short hole with a slight dog leg left. But the challenges are yet to come. The greens and fairways have sloping that can not be beat. The course has a good number of hills. On the back nine be prepared for some blind shots. The par 3 15th is a up hill shot to a green you can not see. The last hole gives another blind approach to the green. The clubhouse does not disappoint either. Huge lockers are great for both men and women. The club offers several dining rooms. The pro shop is huge and offers a variety of apparel.
