Located high atop the Allegheny Mountains, Sunnehanna Country Club is a jewel. It's not an unknown jewel because it's a thriving club, but it doesn't get the publicity that some clubs within an hour's drive.
This is an A.W. Tillinghast design that opened in 1923. As you'd expect at a elite course like this one, it's very private and you'll need to either play in an outing there or make friends with a member.
It is always in exquisite shape, the greens are always smooth and quick and it's hard to keep your mind on your game because of the natural beauty of the place.
Distance from the white tees is 6,319 yards, it's 6,671 from the blues and 6,868 from the gold.
But really, this golf course is all about getting the ball in the fairway, getting it on the green and trying to do what you can on those greens.
Hard to pick a signature hole, but the four par 3s are as good as you'll find anywhere.
It's in a class with the Laurel Valleys, Fox Chapels, Alleghenys in western Pennsylvania.
Because of its' somewhat remote location, it's just not as well known. golfpsu on 2009-10-21 wrote the following regarding Sunnehanna Country Club:
Sunnehanna Country Club is my favorite golf course. I took my first swing as a golfer on this golf course, and fell in love instantly. The golf course is always in immaculate condition. Sunnehanna is a Tillinghast design, and stays true to old tradional layouts. Tight fairways are accompanied with tall pine, oak, and maple trees. In addition, the course hosts a variety of golf tournaments throughout the year including the Sunnehanna Amateur Invitational, held every June for top amateurs. The first hole gets your attention immediately with its spectacular view of the Laurel Highland Mountains. Every hole is framed by wonderful views of the valley and the surronding mountains.
