On 2002-11-07, Stan rated this Callaway x14 a 3...(761)

Purchase: I purchased the clubs online from the Callaway Pre-Owned website. I was ready to upgrade from a set of Taylor Made Burners. I purchased a set that were classified as excellent condition for $425. When I recieved them UPS and was elated with the condition of the clubs. Some in the set looked like they had never been hit.
Pros: The clubs initially were hard for me to hit but then I was in a slump before I bought them which is why I bought a new set of clubs in the first place. But after a little practice I began to hit them pretty good. The 5-9 irons are sweet, but like most 18 handicappers I still have a little trouble with the 3 & 4. The trajectory is high and the distance is average. The clubs have a very appealing look and have held up well to 2 rounds a week and once a week practice sessions.
Cons: I really have to hit down hard on the clubs to hit them well. This causes me to pull the ball on a regular basis. I wind up aiming to the right of my target most days. I have tried the Taylor Made 320 irons and Ping I3's and feel both are easier to hit than the X-14s. I hope to trade the Callaways in on one of theses 2 iron sets by the end of the year.
Quality: The clubs are constructed very well. I have the CW stell shafts and original grips. The finish of the clubhead has held up well. The cavity has a groove all the way around the inside of it the will retain dirt and moisture. Not ideal for a year round golfer that plays in all conditions.

Review Summary: The clubs look good and the price was reasonable. But the Ping I3 or Taylormade 320s allow for a smoother less forceful swing without the pull. The problem may be the CW shafts just are not stiff enough fo my swing speed. If I bought these clubs again I would go with the graphite stiff of special order stiff shafts.
