Purchase: I purchased the componenets from Caliber Golf in Louisville, KY and assembled the clubs myself. I had played blades for years, but was golfing pretty infrequently. After a woeful round, a good friend pointed out that there was 30 years of golfing inovation between my irons and what was on the market today. Point made. I decided to go as far to the technology extreme as I could. I wanted something that would provide me the results I wanted without having to spend hours at the range to keep my swing in shape. I knew these irons were comparative to Callaway's, so I thought the forgivness factor would be pretty high. I also wanted a set the would be "full." (Gap wedge, lob wedge, etc.) I decided to go with a Dynalite shaft to get as close to graphite performance as possible, without the additional cost. For the whole set (3 thru LW) I ended up paying 15 dollars a club or a grand total of $165.00 for those of us who are a little more mathmatically challenged.
Pros: As I set up to play my first shot with the irons I thought, "Man, these things really look chunky." They have a heavy top line, and a decent amount of offset. I then proceded to rip an 8 iron pin high for a two putt par. Suddenly chunky was no problem. The lofts are also 2 to 3 degrees stronger than standard, which is a lot of fun off the tee when all your buddies hit 7 iron to your 9. The addition of a gap wedge that matched the rest of my set was a God send for me filling a huge hole in my short game.
Cons: The only problems that I have had with the irons are a result of swing flaws on my part. I am still all over the board with the lob wedge, but that is a matter of practice to learn the club better, but I would rather poke myself in the eye with a divot tool. The other problem results from a combination of the club's offset, and my aggresive tempo that can sometimes lead to an impressive snap hook. I have to remember to keep my tempo smooth and fire straight off the target line.
Quality: The irons are mid oversize, with a blue medallion on the back that really adds to the clubs looks. As mentioned I used Dynalite shafts, with a vibration dampening device in the shaft. I prefer to use the Golf Pride tour velvet grips. The folks at Caliber Golf are great to work with and always make sure you have thought of everything. (Come on guys, I put these things together, like I'm gonna say the construction was lacking?)
Review Summary: These irons turned out to be just what my game needed. They have really kick started my scoring. I have always considered myself a bogey golfer. I would rather play than practice and do so, nine holes once a week. Until this summer I have always been 45 and up for a nine, this summer that has gone 45 and under, including a 39! (First time ever under 40, had to get that in!) The clubs have helped to improve my confidence, and I find myself firing at more flagsticks not just hoping to hit the green. On average I am hitting 4 to 5 greens in regulation per nine. These clubs will make a difference in your game.
