Purchase: I was first introduced to the Acer XDS Widesole iron in March of 2005. I had paid a visit to a local golf shop to try out and purchase a new set of clubs. My old set (2 years old) had been purchased without the knowledge that they are +1 inch long. Being only 5'9 they were too long. Since I was doing it right this time I had the personnel at the golf shop measure my swing speed and get the length right. The club they had me using to measure swing speed was an Acer XDS Widesole 5 iron. I had come in to the shop cold and my swings didn't feel all that comfortable but I was hitting the ball straight and far and was impressed with the feel. After spending 45 mins looking at and trying other irons I settled on the Acer irons because of the combination of what I had experienced coupled with the price. $ 225.00 3-sw, true temper stiff shafts, lamkin grips.
Pros: What I like most with these irons is the fact that unless you hit thin, you hardly feel the ball strike. Forgiveness is also high on the list. Off-center hits don't go nearly as far off target line as with my other irons. Distance is also a plus, I had occasion last week to hit a nice arcing 5 iron 200 yds and nearly stick the green (they were hard and dry).
Cons: The only negative I have with the clubs is because of the extra width soles, wedge shots off of thin grass or compacted areas need to be taken with care as I have noticed more bounce when the club contacts the ground.
Quality: Construction and quality appear to be good, haven't had anything fall off or a hosel come loose. Don't know what type material heads are made of though and have not been able to find out by researching internet.
Review Summary: By and large an improvement over my other irons (golden bear gba 564's) Shots feel solid, more forgiving on off-center hits and better distance than my other irons. Happy with this purchase and have already dropped an average of 5-6 shots since buying these. I would recommend these clubs to beginner or intermediate golfers looking for a set of affordable irons that will help take a few strokes from the scorecard.
