Purchase: After much research and deliberation, purchased a set from gigagolf.com for about $170.00 Pros: Several years ago I decided that my problem was not the fact that I played infrequently and had not taken any real lessons since college, but rather that I did not own a set if shiny expensive clubs. First I bought a set of Hogan irons on eBay. Very shiny, pretty expensive, but not very well suited for my game.
After a year or two with those, I spend a bunch more money on a set of Ping i3 irons (on eBay again). Not as shiny, more expensive, but the shafts didn't really suit my game and I never got comfortable with them.
Getting a little smarter, I went to a local pro and got fit for some clubs. This time I bought Titleist 804-OS clubs. A bunch more money, and a very nice set of clubs. Problem was, I let my ego (and the pro) steer me toward these clubs that were not forgiving enough for my game. About this time I started taking some lessons and my game got better. My ballstriking improved, but the Titleist clubs were still a little tough to hit. I decided to look at the Callaways, and after hitting some demos I fell in love with the X-18s.
One day when scouring the internet for a bargain price on these clubs, I found Gigagolf.com and the Acer XP-905s. I had owned a couple of Acer fairway woods years ago, so I was familiar with the brand and felt like they were pretty good quality. The price of the XP-905s was unbeatable, and you could customize them with whatever shaft, grip, length, and lie you wanted, so I ordered a set.
These are great clubs. The appearance, quality of materials and construction, and (most importantly) the performance is every bit as good as the high-dollar name brand clubs you drool over at the golf shop. They are easy to hit, have a wonderful high ball flight, and feel GREAT!
Cons: The only thing I don't like about these irons is that they are a constant reminder of the large amounts of cash I blew on Hogan, Ping, and Titleist irons previously. Quality: Beautiful polished chrome finish, solid feel, and excellent quality clubs. Review Summary: If you are thinking about buying Callways, do yourself a favor and consider these terrific irons. Spend the money you save on some short game lessons.

Purchase: Even though I was looking to move away from the Big Bertha type irons, I’ve always been attracted to the Callaway style. My brother has a set of X-12’s that he let me hit; the head was still a bit large for me, but I was more consistent. Then I saw the X-18’s and tried a couple of demo clubs. THIS seemed like a club for me; it was lighter than my irons, with a smaller sole that allowed me to dig down, pick the ball and swing through. However, spending $700+ on irons was NOT in my budget. Unlike some people, I have no aversion to using “clones”, so I set out to find a head that matched the style of the X-18’s. After doing a lot of research, I settled on the Acer XP-905 through Gigagolf. What I liked about the XP-905 was the fact that it wasn’t EXACTLY like the X-18; it had some of the same characteristics, but also it’s own style. I decided on the 5-PW, with the True Temper Feather Flight shaft in a regular flex and a midsize Lamkin wrap grip. I also went with the Acer XP Hybrid 4 iron and a UST PHG 100 graphite regular flex shaft…but that’s for another review. I paid $148 total for the complete set and received them via UPS 4 days after ordering. Pros: Just out of the box, merely swinging the clubs in my front yard I could tell they felt “right”. The feel was VERY much like that of the X-18’s. I had to go out of town on business, but upon returning I headed right to the practice range. The irons have a very sharp appearance, with clean lines. The first thing I noticed was that I was able to “work” the ball much more than I ever had with my previous irons. Also, I was more accurate; I picked out various targets and was landing the ball very close. They were MUCH lighter than my old irons and easier to swing smoothly. These are very much “Let the clubs do the work” irons; I have a very simple takeaway and downswing and these clubs match that perfectly. I was concerned about the potential “Should I have chosen firm over regular?” flex issue, but it ISN’T an issue. I’ve rarely broken 90 during a round, but with the XP-905’s my first two round were a very solid 86 and 85. Take away a few brain spasms and I could have broken 80. It’s like “I visualize what I want to do with my irons…and FINALLY I do it!”. As the old saying goes “What’s not to like”? Cons: Nothing. The clubs and service have been everything I was expecting. Quality: The construction and feel of the clubs is excellent. The True Temper shafts and Lamkin midsize grips are great. They look and play super. Perhaps an expert could tell the difference, but these look and feel like high dollar clubs to me. Review Summary: I’ve played with Callaway, Titleist and other “Brand Name” irons before and they’re terrific...but so are the XP-905’s. As I said earlier I couldn’t afford to spend $700 on golf clubs, and with these irons I didn’t have to. You can call these clubs whatever you want to: clone, knockoff, copy. All I know is they work wonderfully for me and are an excellent value. I'll be going back to Gigagolf in the future.
