Pros: After playing 7 years with my starter set I decided it was finally time to get a new set of irons. Every year one of the local St. Louis area courses has a nice demo day where every major manufacturer had a booth and reps sowing off the new equipment. I strongly recommend anyone looking for equipment to take advantage of this sort of event. There is nothing like testing clubs from a variety of manufacturers side by side.
I had heard very good things about the Adams Idea irons, and their tent was my first stop. The rep there was very accommodating and helpful, asking me questions about my game and style of play. There are three Idea models:
Idea Irons – for beginners
Idea A1 Irons for intermediate golfers
Idea A1 Pro for low-handicappers
As an intermediate golfer, I am starting to have success shaping my shots, and many of the “game improvement” sets are designed to hit straight, and don’t allow for much shot shaping. After testing the standard and A1 lines, I found that the A1 were just as easy to hit, but allowed me to hit very nice draws and fades. I still need some help, and the A1s allowed me to get the ball in the air very nicely. They had a very solid feel, and miss hits didn’t knock my fillings loose.
One innovation that Adams had (and has since been copied by many other manufacturers) is to replace the 3 and 4 irons with hybrid clubs. This isn’t just a gimmick. These hybrids are truly a joy to hit. I almost never hit anything longer than a 5 iron because they are too hard to hit.
One thing I found, no matter what manufacturers clubs I hit, was that the steel shafts always felt better and were much more accurate. This wasn’t just my observation. I asked other tester to try it, and we all were much closer to the target with the steel shafts, and the distance was pretty much the same. I am sure there are those who can benefit from the graphite shafts, but it isn’t me.
One surprise I had was that Barney Adams himself was at the Adams tent! I don’t know if there was any other owners or CEOs at this event, but that impressed the heck out of me. He wasn’t just hanging around either – he was working with the visitors, offering advice and being helpful.
Cons: Nothing so far.
Quality: Very solid construction. Beautiful looks.
Review Summary: Great playability and outstanding value. Highly recommended.
