Purchase: Ordered over the internet from a golf pro shop in southern Illinois. Paid $315, including shipping.
Reviewed these irons by reading this site, and settled on them based upon how they looked and
what other golfers had to say. First time I have EVER bought a set of irons without
first hitting them at a range, etc., AND I AM LEFTHANDED, so this was a real step out for me. Bought
them in late September, 02.
Pros: These irons are, flat out, the best clubs I have ever hit. I have owned and played Wilson, Cobra and Prima, and these irons are heads above them in performance. I began considering these irons after I spent two months bidding on some Titlest 983s. I visited a pro shop and saw the Ultimates and liked their look. I started seriously considering them after I read reviews on this site and thought about how much I like the Adams driver (ST) that I hit. These irons hit straight, no veering off to the left or right. With my old clubs I thought my approaches were just scooting right or left because of the way I stuck the ball, but I don't see that with these clubs. They go straight at the direction I line up on.The irons have a good feel at striking, and they will let you know if you have mishit, but your contact has to be pretty bad before these irons tell you that. On slight off-the-sweet-spot shots these irons perform!
Cons: The ONLY downside to them that I can see is that you really need a lob or gap wedge with the regular iron set. I can hit the wedge about 15 yards farther than my old clubs, so the clubhead loft has to be a little steeper on these irons. Close-up pitch shots require an open face at approach, which can be rectified by adding a gap or lob to your set.
Quality: The Ultimates have a sharp look about them; they look like a blade, but play like a game-improvement club. The clubs are consistent in their hits - I hit the 5 iron longer than the 6 iron, etc., which tells me that the Adams Company paid attention to detail when building these clubs.
Review Summary: I am left handed, so finding clubs can be tough. I shopped for almost 3 months before I bought these, and the time spent in the search was well worth the wait. I plan to play with these irons a long time!! GREAT SET.
