On 2006-05-24, Birdie Hunter rated this Ashton X-1 a 5...(6949)

Details: 10.5 degree head built with an Aggressive nRage S-flex shaft.

Purchase: I aquired 'this unit' in February, 2006. Driver Head - $169, Shaft - $79, Grip - $1 for a total cost of $260. Fortunately, I have several friends who are certified custom club builders, so I didn't do the internet thing.
Pros: The construction of the head is top notch. Very very solid club. Nice feel at impact as well. It has a comforting classic look at address that isn't quite as overbearing as most 460cc heads I've tried. It is all too common for people to say that a driver gave them an additional 10-20 yards off the tee. I've always thought those people are full of it or accidently hit the sweet spot for a change, so here is the honest truth: It is not shorter than any other driver I've hit and it is longer than most.
Cons: It is still a bit pricy for a component head that was released a couple of years ago.
Quality: The quality and construction of the head are top notch. The degrees of tolerence on the construction of the head aren't as small as the stuff Tom Wishon puts out, but at least they have the guts to list their tolerences on their website. I am lucky to have friends that work with me to put together a driver that is built to fit my swing, rather than me trying to fit my swing to a driver.

Review Summary: I am really disappointed in the other reviews of this club head on this site. They all seem to be geared toward a website rather than the actual club. This club is not going to hit the ball for you. You still have to do that all by yourself. However, if you get a driver custom built for you with this head, the proper shaft and correct swing weight for your game, there is no other driver out there that will be longer or straighter for you. There is no component club head on the market that 'causes' a slice. That's just a stupid thing to say. Now the Ashton is built without the crutch of an offset, so that could be it or it could have been the swing weight, shaft length, shaft stiffness or any other number of factors, but blaming the club head is just un-educated garbage. Don't buy one off eBay or order what you 'think' you need from an internet site. Those were built for someone else. Get fitted.

Purchase: I purchased this ashton x-1 driver head through custom golf shop for $195. The shaft I put into it makes the club through it was a accra 65 stiff. I had heard that this was suppose to be a great new driver head out on the market.
Pros: The head is very easy to look at ,and sets up very pleasantly to the eye. Which is half the battle in hitting any club ,simple confidence standing over the ball. The ball comes off the face awesome ,allowing the person to work the ball either way .
Cons: No real dislikes , I just found the paint chipped off the head easily.
Quality: good design seamless construction , very high quality unit .

Review Summary: This is a great driver head to play with; and will certainly help alot of people. I hope everyone enjoys playing with it as much as I do. One hint don't lend it to a playing parter , you might never get it BACK!!!

Purchase: I paid $200.00 for the head. It was wayyyy too much for it!!!
Pros: Absolutely nothing at all!!!
Cons: I just hate this driver. This has to be the very worst driver I ever owned...period!
Quality: I wouldn't know about the construction but what I do know is that the paint job is horrible. Started to fade after only one month.

Review Summary: Don't waste your hard earned money on Ashton...It's not worth the money...far from it. To me, it's not worth more than $75.00 at best. Also, be aware that people from Custom Club Shop are making great reviews on certain sites but then, they also own Ashton product line. Someone else mentioned that he posted a review on their site (customclubshop.com)and they changed what he wrote within 24 hours. I tested this by doing it myself and sure enough, they never posted my review. Very dishonest company! I'm sticking with KZG and Golfsmith from now on.

Purchase: Bought this club from Custom Golf Shop after I read it was used to win long drive competitions.
Pros: This head has a very hot face. I have a SK Fiber Rev 1 45" shaft (spined) and the ball "explodes" off the face This combo works very well for my quick tempo. The ball has tremendous hang time and usually very straight.
Cons: There is no arrow guide for alignment.
Quality: The head, quite frankly, looks like a beautiful black beast.

Review Summary: I would rate the Ashton X1 as good as any out there. The real problem, for any golfer, is choosing the right shaft - what a chore.

Purchase: I bought this driver on Ebay for only $65.00 which to me was a great deal considering that the shaft on it was worth over $85.00 (NVS).
Pros: It's a good looking driver...No doubt about that. The head looks as nice as anything else on the market.
Cons: At first glance, there's nothing to dislike about this driver. The color of the shaft associated with the head is just perfect. The problem here is when I started to play with it. It's just horrible! I never, ever sliced like this before! I know it's not the shaft as I've tried it quite a few times in the past without any problems whatsoever so what else is left? The head? I guess so. Cheap construction? Perhaps.
Quality: Great shaft...Poor quality head.

Review Summary: I made a mistake by trying Ashton but at least it wont cost me much as I can remove the shaft and keep it for further use. I read a review which basically said that re-sellers that do provide a chance to post a review on their website will not post the bad ones and or just re-write what you posted (customgolfshop.com to name one). I was REALLY sceptical about that so I decided to post a few on different sites where they do sell the product. To my amazement, they were never posted! I even tried to post a negative review on www.golfreview.com and guess what? They removed it after a few days. I emailed them asking for a reason but they never even answered me. My guess is that since they have companies that will advertise on their site, they will make sure that they will look nice when it comes to reviews. Cheap site of you ask me.

Purchase:
Pros: The paint job.
Cons: Well, I have been playing with this driver for nearly 3 weeks to give it a good chance but it is still not working for me. I tried a couple different shafts but I still slice it! This head will never replace my Taylor Made...period! It will be posted on Ebay for those who fancy Ashton drivers.
Quality: Even after 3 weeks, it still looks like new.

Review Summary: I find it funny when I read this review in here from this guy that wrote that he gained 10 more yards with this Ashton driver. He also mentioned that he had to get use to the 46" shaft. That tells me that his old driver was probably around 45" (maybe even less)which means that with an inch longer to this new driver, he would for sure gain about 10 yards or so. It's not Ashton that made the difference my friend, it's the total lenght of your new driver.

Purchase: A friend of mine suggested that we should try different components to see how they would compare to OEM's. I thought that this would be interesting so we purchased an Ashton X-1 and an Alpha C830.2 driver heads. Both of them are 10.5 degrees and both were shafted with an NVS regular shaft. The Ashton was purchased from Golfclubshop.com while the Alpha from golffoundry.com.
Pros: Both heads were really nice. I was glad that I could try both as it would've been difficult to select only one.
Cons: I tried the Ashton first. Even though I love the look of the club, I never sliced a ball like I did with this club. Why? Who knows really. I guess that Ashton is just not for me. The Alpha was a different story. This one was long and straight. What I didn't like was the sound at impact but if it's in the middle of the fairway and long, I can deal with it...wouldn't you?
Quality: The construction of both heads are of a very high quality. I could easily compare them to most OEM's.

Review Summary: customclubshop.com offers their clients to post a review on the website which I gladly did. Even though it wasn't the very best review, it wasn't the worst one either. On the next day, I went back online to purchase a few Ashton fairway woods and to my surprise, they completely changed what I wrote but kept my name on the review. They also switch the ratings! The truth is, I am amazed that some websites would offer the possibility to post reviews and then re-arranged them to suit their needs. You have to wonder now just how many bad reviews some components had in the past and were either changed or deleted. You shouldn't purchase components on reviews alone but it gives you an idea to what you are looking for. I have searched some sites that offers to review what they sell and the only one I found so far that actually accepted criticism was Golfsmith. All the others had only positive reviews which when you think about it is simply impossible. Hey, criticism only makes you better in the long run. No wonder why Golfsmith is such a giant.

Purchase: I suppose that most golfers enjoys to try something new here and there just in case it could help their game. A friend of mine proposed that we should perhaps try a few components just to see how they compared to well known companies such as Callaway, Taylor Made... Mine was the Ashton. I bought the unit at Customclubshop.com and had it installed with an NVS shaft.
Pros: It looks nice but that's about it.
Cons: For whatever reasons, I just can't seem to hit this driver. I never sliced a driver like this one...period! I mean, it's all over the place.
Quality: The product seems to be of quite good quality.

Review Summary: I did leave a review at the website where I purchased the head from and once I went back the next day to order something else, I realized that they changed what I wrote but kept my name for the review. Then, they changed the 2 star rating to a 4. After I complained about it, they told me that they never done this before. Sure guys...we believe you! That certainly makes you wonder how many times they have done this in the past...Wouldn't you agree? Just don't trust all that you read about products from a website where they sell it from. They just don't want to post bad reviews...It's just not good for sales. I need to be fair here and say that we all have some problems with certain product lines no matter if they are good or not. Mine seems to be the Ashton Driver. I'm sure that it's an ok product but just not for me. Have fun out there.

Purchase: I recently played with a supplier of Ashton heads and noticed this fellow was outdriving me by 20 yards even though it was obvious he wasn't a long ball hitter. I went online and placed an order at www.customclubshop.com and received a Ashton 9.5 degree driver with the Accuflex VS339 'S' flex at 46". Price was $349 CDN.
Pros: Ashton is a new long driving head on the market that has developed a head that maximizes the spring like effect for people with swingspeeds from 90mph to 150mph. These claims seem to be very accurate. It took a couple of rounds to get used to the 46" shaft but it was worth the wait. Driving Distance has improved by at least 10 yards but more importantly accuracy has improved. I'm averaging 10/14 fairways which is awesome for me. Flight tends to be very straight although I've had success both trying to draw or fade the ball. I actually have a "go to" fade that hits fairways at will. My old driver would slice terribly with this same swing.
Cons: Dislikes, the grip. I choose the Golf Pride Crossline grip and I don't like it very much. I need to regrip my whole set over the winter so the extra club isn't a big deal.
Quality: The quality is very good. I can't remember all the details but the manufacturer has a lot of material on their website about why it is made better. In general it is a cast club with a minimum number of welds. The only thing I'm not sure about is why there is a rubber 'plug' like thing on the bottom of the club. Weird but it doesn't seem to effect anything.

Review Summary: In general an awesome club for both distance and accuracy. For $349 you get a club with a superior head and a superior shaft. OEM's create a very good head but sometimes the shafts aren't up to aftermarket standards. I'm very satisfied with the purchase.
