Purchase: bought at target for 39.98
Pros: long, spins great and has a nice look to it.
Cons: you have to constantly wipe your ball to get the grass off.
Quality: top of the line.

Review Summary: great ball, hard to say if its my fav.

Purchase: $40 at Dick's. I'm pretty sure there's no way to get these balls any cheaper unless you buy last year's version (just called "Apex Tour" - the "Red" version of the 2004 Hogan balls is the same thing).
Pros: I like the control that this ball gives me. After watching shot after shot hit the green and then roll 20 feet past the hole, I decided it was time to get some real golf balls instead of playing with whatever was in the jar downstairs. So, after the attractive packaging caught my eye, I read the box and decided that this ball sounded like it could help my game. In my experience, this ball has great spin on the greens. It's not so much that your balls will constantly roll back to the fringe, but enough that the ball will only slightly release on an 8-iron shot. I have already had several shots near the pin hit the green and stop. Having that kind of control helps my game immensely. Though I don't hit the ball very far, there is definitely an improvement in distance with this ball. It feels nice off the tee, soft, but not too soft, and you'll definitely gain 10-20 yards from a $20-$25 ball.
Cons: The price is a tad intimidating. The fact that you do get both distance and spin from this ball helps to justify it, but it's still a lot of money to have to put up. I personally don't chew up golf balls, but there are reports of the ball scuffing very easily. The "Red" 2004 version has a new cover that is supposed to be more durable, but I can't confirm or deny it. The 8-iron spin may be frustrating if you have a tendency to hit the front of greens.
Quality: As far as I can tell, these balls are constructed to the same standards as all of Ben Hogan's equipment. There have been comments about scuffing but, aside from a run-in with a tree, I have yet to have this problem.

Review Summary: Basically, if you can front the $40, you can't go wrong with these balls. You'll probably gain distance if you're playing a cheaper ball, and you're definitely going to improve your short game and control around the green. This ball was tested against the Titleist ProV1, a ball that costs $5 more per dozen and is used pretty heavily on tour, and every tester found the Hogan to be more workable around the green. Just a little food for thought.
