On 2005-06-23, Brent rated this Ben Hogan BH-5 Standard (Apex 4 shafts) a 5...(5720)
Purchase: Having tried these clubs before, I purchased them at Golftown when an opportunity arose for a set in practically new condition at $300.
Pros: Being Ben Hogans, it is a given that these are going to be attractive, classy looking clubs. They have nothing on them that shouldn't be there. They look timeless...a rare quality in cavity backs.
They look great at set-up. The top-line is not too large (owing in part to a bevelled top-line), and the Standard set I have has little offset, making it much easier to line-up.
Because there is very little offset, there is no shot bias with these irons. I struggled with my previous irons because they had offset. My natural iron shot is a draw, but the offset would exagerate this into a hook. It also meant that I would have to aim a fair distance to the left (lefty) in order to compensate, making set-up very difficult. It also means that working the ball is much easier, although I am much more interested in the straight shots right now (it is nice to know the potential is there when I eed it though).
The shaft is very similar feeling to the S300's that were in my previous clubs. Also, the distance discrepancy between the two is negligable.
Because they are castings, they do not offer the feel of forged clubs, but I can honestly say they are the best feeling of all castings I've hit, and I've hit a few. On the other hand, because they are castings they will also be more durable and resistant to dings than forgings.
Finally, the price was unbelievable for the condition they are in
Cons: There is nothing I dislike about these clubs. Although I love the feel of forged irons, I am not confident enough in my game to swing blades, and am not serious enough in my game to make that sort of investment in the initial cost, as well as the maintenace of forged clubs. I intend this to be the last set I buy, so cast seemed the way to go, sacrificing feel for durability.
These clubs will also have to be properly fitted to my stature, although this is not a dislike, just a necessary adjustment. I will be staying with the Apex shafts and the original Hogan grips.
Quality: Both the construction and quality of these irons are first-rate. There are now two significant reputations on the line...Ben Hogan and Callaway. These names mean something in golf...you can be sure they want it kept that way.
Review Summary: My irons play has always been the weakest link in my game. I had improved on that with some help from much beter golfers, but was still uncomfortable with the set-up of my old irons. I have missed with the BH-5's, but nowhere near the extent of my previous set. Aiming these irons is simple...a good swing puts the ball where you aimed it. On the first round with these clubs I was shooting at pins from 6 iron up, instead of hoping to hit greens. I also got quite a few compliments on the looks of these irons, which didn't feel too bad either.
