On 2009-10-26, Aimee rated this Ben Hogan Riviera 50* Gap a 5...(8581)

Details: Chrome finish, DynaLite steel shaft.

Purchase: Acquired from my husband when he decided he didn't need it.
Pros: Low bounce (8*), thin sole. This club works well out of many types of conditions. Nice soft feel, a very good wedge. The DynaLite shaft feels similar in weight to all of my other clubs which are graphite shafted, so it fits in well.
Cons:
Quality: Excellent quality...this wedge is probably 5 years old and other than cosmetic marks, still works very well.

Review Summary: 'Old Skool' but effective.

On 2007-07-30, Big David rated this Ben Hogan Riviera 50* Gap a 5...(7875)

Details: This is the chrome finish, 50.08 gap/approach wedge.

Purchase: I bought this wedge online nearly a year ago. I paid $49.99 on sale, they're normally $89-109. I bought it to cover the 95-105 approaches reliably. I have a 46* PW and a 56* SW so this was a nice strong option for the GAP. My play had improved lately, and I hadn't carried one before I got this.
Pros: Everything. This is a solid, well-built, awesome club. It has become my go-to club every chance I get for a consistent, reliable approach shot. On par-5's and short par-4's I will play to this club's yardage every time. In the fairway, if it's picked pretty clean it lands so soft, and spins back. It has the perfect amount of bounce. It's heavier and thus more stable and it is great from a tight lie. I credit the club. If you make a good swing, it does the rest! The wide grooves and stability, you just let the club do the work.
Cons: Nothing.
Quality: This is as good as any club I carry. It is great looking, feels incredible, and is as consistent as a club can be. It has a good grip stock grip. I've had it nearly a year and it looks as good-as-new. Highest of quality in any price range. How cool is the BH logo, too?

Review Summary: The bottom line: It, (along with a different model Hogan wedge I bought for my SW,) is so awesome all-around that I will seriously consider Hogan for my new gear needs going forward. I hope Callaway continues the tradition of quality. I know they're paring down the number of Hogan products, in fact this Riviera wedge is being discontinued and can be found really affordably. It seems they make something awesome and it disappears within 2 years. If it ain't broke...oh well. Get one (or 3) while you can. You cannot go wrong! It is as good as any wedge on the market (I've demo-ed them all, including Callaway, Vokey, Cleveland, Taylormade) ...due to it's solid, high-quality craftsmanship and consistent good performance. It's great for short greenside chips with it's slightly lower amount of bounce. And it is pure pleasure with a full swing to stick it close. Nearly every memorable approach I've hit where it gets super close, backs-up like a pro, and my small handful of birdies in my lifetime was hit with this wedge. They come in numerous loft and bounce combinations. A true 5 out of 5.
