On 2003-06-20, agolfer rated this Butler SSTi 10.5* Fujikura a 4...(1574)

Purchase: I bought this driver at the local golf shop over 18mos ago. At the time I hit it against a Callaway and Ping and it just seemed to me a more balanced unit that allowed me to swing within my self. I liked the driver enough to buy another one but with a 9.5* loft. I thought I would get more distance/role with this setup.
Pros: I've been wanting to upgrade my 10.5* club to one of the big named brands and hopefully get the increased distance everyone seems to claim it gives them. To that end I have hit Taylormade 580/540, Titleist 983/975 and Ping Si3. All these clubs are much newer technology wise than my Butler. In my experience the Butler gave me better distance/feel than both the Taylormade's and Ping! The Titleist had a similar feel and what seemed like a marginal increase in distance. In spite of having the ability to get any big name brand club I wanted I kept going back to the Butler. It just felt and performed the best overall!
Cons: The 9.5* club was an entirely different unit to the 10.5* Whereas my original 10.5* degree unit has a dull finish on the club face the 9.5* has a high shine face. No idea why. When hitting the 9.5* unit the feel was quite harsh and I found the club difficult to control. I had a few good hits but nothing on the same level as the 10.5*. It was a different club entirely that I could not make work for me so I returned it.
Quality: The is a well engineered and constructed piece. There is paint chipping but not clear if this is any more than usual.

Review Summary: As much as I would want to I cannot justify replacing my 10.5* with anything I've hit on the market today. I'm going to have to wait until next year and see if something "better" comes out. I would love to see this club in the hands of a tour pro who can really put it thru its paces.
