On 2006-02-27, Hammer Time rated this Callaway Big Bertha 2006 a 4...(6687)

Details: This is not the blue or red Berthas of old, it is the new one...the only one they now make for Big Bertha 2006.

Purchase: Bought a sleeve at a local golf superstore in Los Angeles for $5.99, with the intention of trying it out, as a replacement for the spin-less distance (bargain) balls I usually play, to go along with my better play of late. Hoping it would be that special distance ball with the feel of a 3-piece. They're $19.99/dozen at the same store.
Pros: This is in the range I'm willing to pay (NOW) for balls due to increased play and decreased scores of late, I wanted more than my Top Flights...but can't play a V1 or similar for many reasons, namely the high cost. And I'm not good enough. :) I like a lot about this ball. It is well-made, has good distance and carry when hit really well, and is checks-up on greens a lot better than I had come to expect from a 2-piece distance ball. It is AWESOMELY durable. I am quite impressed. The soft landings and spin into greens are a plus, I tried this one and an HX Hot from the same tee on a par 3 and the Bertha stopped where it hit and to be fair, the HX Hot flew further but rolled out like 12-16 feet. So kudos to Bertha for excellent 2-piece feel and control.
Cons: Like many distance balls the Big Bertha for '06 will fly, but if it is mis-hit is can be ugly. I wish it felt a degree more controlled and not so ready to jump. I don't like putting with it at all. I don't find that it holds a line particularly well, and it leaps off the putter and requires extremely gentle touch or it will sail. I've actually putt-ed better with a cheaper ball.
Quality: Well-made, good looking, EXTREMELY DURABLE, and high quality for a 2-piece distance ball. It scores big for durability and quality. You'll use and re-use these balls.

Review Summary: Good for a 2-piece distance ball, and exceptional feel. I wish it rolled better with the putter and wasn't so jumpy, otherwise it would be my easy choice, as a bargain-hunter willing to pay just slightly more for a better distance ball. If a Top Flight or Pinnacle is your bargain ball, this one is worth the extra 3 or 4 dollars per dozen. Expect it to be just slightly shorter than the longest of the distance balls with way more control. It has slightly less feel, (BUT STILL VERY GOOD,) than a 3-piece ball in the $20-25 range.
