On 2008-04-05, DocT rated this Callaway HX Tour 56 2007 a 5...(8059)

Details: This is the 2007 version of their HX Tour 56 3-piece golf ball. Cover is a white, soft, thin Urethane layer. Core is made of polybutadiene to promote longer distance. RIM (Reaction Injection Molding) process combines cover softness, thinness and consistency. 332 Hex Geometries dimples. Optimized for tour performance.

Purchase: Received a sample 2-ball sleeve from Callaway Demo Day at the Roger Dunn golf store in Santa Ana, CA. Can't go wrong with a free sleeve of golf balls.
Pros: This HX Tour 56 golf ball is a little harder than the Precept Laddie Extreme. Distance off my driver is about the same as the Precept, on a good drive. Trajectory and flight seems to be more penetrating in windy conditions, compared to the Precept Laddie. Greenside spins is very noticable and great also. I don't usually have a lot of backspin on short chips, but this HX Tour 56 ball seemed to check more. This was perfect for those forward pins thats about 10 feet from the front of the green.
Cons: The cover is very thin. I like to hit trees and cart paths, but more damage was done to the ball by my wedges and short irons. I went through 2 balls in 9 holes, especially when the cover starts to peel back.
Quality: Quality is great as usual from a Callaway product. Soft, thin cover for better checks equates to more scuffs. But then again, something must be sacrificed for better performance. Construction is also great.

Review Summary: Tour performance golf ball may be a bit too advance for my level of play. But I must admit I really like this ball's performance off the tee and on the green. Sad to see the HX Tour series golf ball replaced by the new I series. Now I need to get a demo sleeve of that.
