On 2004-02-25, Dan rated this Callaway Hawkeye Pro Series 3.2 Gold Series Pro Shaft a 5...(2938)
Purchase: Got it online at one of the discount golf retailers, only paid something like $190, or close to that. Ed: 1999 model.
Pros: I caddy at a country club, so I always have access to try all the new clubs, and when the original hawyeke came out, I had to give it a shot, but it just didnt feel right. Ran into a buddy of mine who's a Wilson Golf Rep., and he happened to have the pro series in his bag, seeing the difference, I had to try it. Right off the bat, couldnt hit it great, but was hitting it much better than the regular, so I went and go my own. I've had it for probably 3 years now, and have on days and off days with it (which is why I keep like 4 drivers with my bag, whichever I hit best at the range b4 my round, is what stays in there), but overall, I've hit some of the longest drives I've ever seen with it.
For a stretch of probably 8 years, I always struggled off the tee with a driver, and eventually, it got so bad, I was teeing off with a 3-iron, but with this driver, I've lipped out a double-eagle on a 367 yard par 4, at least, thats what the people that were putting said when I tried to appologize, and I'm normally leaving 2nd shots of mid-irons into 520+ yard par 5's.
Cons: Hitting 350+ yard average drives, what could I possibly complain about?!?
Quality: Great feel everytime you swing, great weighting, everything, only problem I've run across, the stock shafts arent all that great, it originally came with the 3.1 silver pro shaft in it, but two years of booming drives apparently took it's toll on it, and hitting on the range one day, no contact with the ground, just hit the ball, and the head went flying. Had a Graffaloy x-stiff shaft put in, and couldnt hit it (club pro sent it out accidently, but I said I'd give it a shot), when I couldnt hit it, I had it sent back to Callaway in late 2002, got the 3.2 shaft put in, and initially lost a good 50 yards off my drives, figured it out, and have hit my longest drives since then. Not to mention, free new shaft, cant complain about that at all.
Review Summary: If you arent either a low handicap, or a very long driver, this isnt the club for you, go buy one of the new callaway vft's or erc's, or even one of he ping isi's, or taylor made r500's.... As the sole of this club says, this is a "Pro Series" club, for the pro.
