On 2004-08-26, Paul rated this Callaway Big Bertha Fairway Wood a 4...(4176)

Purchase: Trade in my Adams Tight Lies GT fairway wood and some cash for this model. A great deal. Well priced, great name and great look. This club is worth buying on look alone. Tested the 3 wood with a steel shaft. Tried it out with 20 range balls, good contact had a problem with a slight draw.
Pros: Long, good contact with this club gives you a ball that travels further than most people's drive. Went from 230 with roll with my Tight Lies to 250 plus roll with my Callaway. Put a Graffaloy blue pro launch on this club and now when my driver isn't working for me on any given day I can take this out and still reach par 5's in two!! Ball flight is low and tends to not deviate in winds. Ball rolls far and is able to bounce out of deep roughs. The sound on a good shot makes your playing partners tremble, the thing is loud and has the perfect "ping".
Cons: Bought the club with a steel shaft at first. I liked the control of it at first but after a while we came to an end. As I mentioned above, put a Graffalow blue pro launch regular flex (the bore through hosel makes it play like a stiff) on it and it is a different club. Ball has a tendency to move right to left quite a bit (I am sure this is me). Distance on it is quite a problem, the gap between my 5 wood and three wood is about 40 yards now and the gap between my driver and wood is 20 yards. So I have to finess shots with the club to shoot some distances. Grooves in club face are hard to clean.
Quality: First class construction. I don't like the fact Callaway only offer one type of steel shaft with this club ( a D-4 swing weight Tour stiff shaft). Great grips and great finish to the club, does not show any marks.

Review Summary: Excellent club, however a good shaft is essential. Real long, which is a good and bad thing. Great construction and great name. A perfect swing with this club will be your best shot of the round.
