On 2007-02-20, MAT rated this Callaway X 3 Wood a 5...(7646)
Details: Fujikura stiff shaft 3 wood (15 degrees of loft) with a Winn G8 mid sized grip.
Purchase: I bought the club at Dick's Sporting Goods in Fayetteville, North Carolina. I read up on the club prior to making the purchase. I paid $199 for the club. I did not have a 3 wood when I started to put my clubs together to learn the game. This club rated really well in all of the magazines. That was why I went with it.
Pros: I can absolutely crush the ball off the tee with this thing. I am usually straight down the middle with the stick too. Occasionally I do have a fade/cut in there but 90% of the time I am solid with the stick. The sound is really good too. When you really hit a good shot it makes a nice ping sound. All of my friends wish that they could hit their 3 wood like I can. I call this my 'money' club. Ball flight is what I would call high. I tee up my ball about an inch off the ground. I usually play either a Callaway HX Hot or Titleist NXT or NXT Tour ball. If I am having an off round with the driver I will use the 3 wood the rest of the round to get me back on track. I broke my Callaway X460 driver this fall and had to use my 3 wood as my long stick. I was still very competitive with the shorter 3 wood off the par 5's. That is reason enough for me to keep this thing.
Cons: Since I got this as a 'learning club' it has been beat up pretty good. I have hit a few miss hits on top of the club and it looks pretty ugly now with the paint chipping off. I am not sure why Callaway came out with the 'Hot' 3 wood. This happened like 6 months after I got my club. I have thought about trying this new 'Hot' club but I hit this thing so well I don't want to chance ruining a good thing. I can not hit a 3 wood off the deck to save my life. This is NOT this clubs fault. The couple times that I have done it the ball goes really far and straight. Normally I use a 2 iron hybrid for the long distances. I would like to read someones review of the Hot 3 wood to see what they think about that club.
Quality: The overall construction is really good. Like I mentioned earlier, I have beat this club up pretty bad. It looks really bad but it STILL performs. You can not judge a book by it's cover. When it was new, it looked good.
Review Summary: This is a solid club for any level of player. Sure the Hot version is the newest thing in fairway woods from Callaway (along with the new Big Bertha fairway wood) but this is still a solid club. The Hot version has a longer shaft and larger head. If you have a hard time hitting a driver since it has a longer shaft, then I would say to stay away from the Hot 3 wood.
