On 2004-02-26, Vernon Johnson rated this Callaway 1996 Big Bertha Gold Irons - Graphite a 5...(2945)

Purchase: I bought my set of Callaway Big Bertha gold irons at a used golf store for 300.00. The set included 2-LW in RH firm graphite. (RCH 96). I had seen these clubs at the golf store in 1996 when they were new on the market but could not afford the 1600.00 price tag.
Pros: The irons have an amazing soft feel like no other iron I have hit. I have hit several of the newer irons coming out on the market, but I have'nt found any as playable as these. The best way to descibe the feel is that it is like hitting a baseball with a wood bat right on the sweet spot. They make getting the ball airborne very easy as the club does most of the work.
Cons: They are a little "high maintenance" to keep looking nice. I have found that brasso works very well to polish the soles after play.
Quality: The clubs are gold in color and are manufactured from aluminum bronze. They are standard cavity back with the typical thick top-line found on most Callaway clubs. The ahafts are Callaway RCH96 graphite firm shafts with matching gold graphics. The grips also have the gold graphics to match. The quality of the clubs are second to none.

Review Summary: The bottom line is that even though these were manufactured in 1996, I feel that Callaway Golf put out their finest set of irons to date. I have yet to find any irons that compare to the feel that you get with these clubs. I believe Callaway hit a home run with these clubs, especially for weekend golfers like myself. I believe the only reason they have not repeated clubs since then made from the aluminum bronze is that it is cost prohibitive in todays highly competitive club market.
