On 2003-05-11, Scott Ross rated this Callaway 2002 Big Bertha a 5...(1295)

Purchase: My dad and I both purchased a new set of irons early this year. I bought the new Ping i3+ and he bought the Callaway BBI's. I have a normal to low ball flight and dad hits it pretty high. The high launch angle of the Callaway's made it difficult for him to knock down shots and play in the wind. The Callaway's produced a ball flight for him that was higher than optimal. Since my ball flight is slightly lower than optimal we decided to trade. I believe he bought the Callaway's for $599.
Pros: The high launch angle of the Callaway BBI's has helped me produce a more optimal ball flight and as I result I'm holding more greens. This is without a doubt the funnest set of irons I've ever played. I normally score in the mid to upper 80s and my iron play has always been a weakness. The wide sole greatly limits fat shots; the giant head has a large sweet spot; and the high launch angle gets the ball up in the air. This club makes up for a lot of my weaknesses. I'm turning in a lot more 82-85s on the score card and a lot fewer 92s.
Cons: The only thing I don't like about the Callaway Big Bertha Irons is the look. You're going to take some heat from your playing partners about the small shovels in your bag. That's fine. I'd rather score well.
Quality: The construction and quality is what you would expect from Callaway -- first rate.

Review Summary: The Callaway Big Bertha Irons are fantastic for my particular game. If you're not a strong iron player and have a less than optimal ball flight, I guarantee you that these irons are going to make the game more fun for you. I hit a lot fewer fat shots, make solid contact more consistently, and am closer to pins because the high ball flight is allowing me to hold greens more frequently. Most importantly, I'm having a lot more fun on the golf course.
