On 2004-02-12, Judge rated this Callaway Big Bertha 2004 Graphite a 5...(2818)

Purchase: I bought these through my pro shop and I paid about the same as I would have paid at Golfsmith.
Pros: There is sweetness to the feel of these irons that belies how hot the ball leaves the clubface. Shots hit toward the toe have good distance and some small measure of harshness. Shots in the sweetspot feel like butter, but explode with a moderately high, but penetrating flight. Distance is truly awesome. I haven't had to use the short irons much close to the green, so I can't speak to that aspect. The reason for this is that I have been fairly successful at getting on with the middle irons due to the straightness of the shots and the precision of the loft system. There is a great feeling of balance to the irons and I (now) like the way they set up to the ball at address. Please see my dislikes about the heads for an explanation about this.
Cons: Initially I was disappointed with a perceived "blockiness" to the heads. Coming from a more traditional (read thinner)cavity back design, the wide sole, thicker topline and cavity design of these new BBs was a distraction... for about 5 swings. I could imagine a cup-like covering over the back of these heads making them look like utility or hybrid irons. The moderately thick topline now gives me a "let'er rip" when I address the ball.
Quality: Routine Callaway excellence. You pay for what you get... and what you get is good.

Review Summary: I like these clubs more each time I swing them. While "easy and hot" is an apt description of some of the college coeds I dated in the '70's, it is a more apt description of these irons. Truly awesome!
