Purchase: I had been wanting a new set of irons for some time, having only used an old spaulding stiff steel set I wanted something I could flow more easy with a smooth swing. I tried the new 02 big bertha's with reg graphite at dicks and loved them but didn't really want to spend 799.99 or even 500+ on ebay. Many people suggested the older model bertha's stating they were better and cheaper. I wanted to try them before buying them and found a used set at play it again sports and used their little hitting area and hit them better than the new models. Searching on ebay I then found the gold version of the 1996 regulars I tried for 275.00 and grabbeb em quick.
Pros: I love everything about these clubs. I have never swung so easy and had the ball jump of the face like it does. I got these for 275.00 shipped in at least 8.5/10 condition, which is outstanding condsidering their age and the fact when new they retailed for about 200.00 an iron! These irons were callaway's response to ping's copper irons such an amazing soft feel. The regular graphite shaft works perfectly with my swing , these are deadly accurate and land soft.
Cons: Nothing. I love these but will try to be objective. There are only 3 things that may deter someone from getting these.
1. The rounded sole and thick top line take getting used to and some may just not adjust to it.
2. The age. 7 yr old models do have some wear but perform great, though some people just have to get a new set.
3. They are Callaway, some people just seem to hate this brand without even trying it first for whatever reasons. But I know many have switched to them after one experience.
Quality: Construction as with all callaway products is solid. Like I said for being as old as they are they show little wear with no damage. Also they are a softer metal that seems it would mark up easier but that's not the case at all. Though I have yet to use callaway's customer service their great track record helped in my decision to get these knowing I could get help when needed.
Review Summary: Bottom line is I am glad I tried the regular flex graphite "game improvement" irons from callaway. Some will say to only play stiff rifle steel forged blades etc, but I checked my ego at the door and gave these a shot. These have lowered my score alot and made me love the game that much more which is what it should be all about, NOT that you play the same clubs as pro's.
